I'm horribly lacking shows from 95. reccommend some

callmethesloth Permalink
callmethesloth Besides the obvious ones, I'm talking about the shows that got the Live Phish treatment and got released. Heard all those and cleared up my hard drive to upload a bunch of 90's shows I haven't heard. I am lacking 95 big time, realizing I don't have a single show from that year anymore! Thanks for any recommendations guys. Only 23 more days till we'll all be ragin at the Garden!

bostonron December '95 is one of the strongest months in Phishtory. Arguably, the hottest month ever. Up there with August '93, Nov/Dec '97, April '92, Feb. '03, July '91, Dec. '99 and Feb. '97. Some say, this is the month Phish really took that leap to super stardom. While making the climb from theaters to arenas, full time, '93 to New Years '95, the band was learning how to play large arenas. Dec. '95 could be when everything really clicked and Phish developed the full, larger then life sound they are so well known for. Every show has major highlights (aside from literally, only one or two). Phish shows were becoming full on sonic assaults. Masterful tight playing. Melodic improvisation and tight compositions were woven into each set, making shows full, deep works of art. It really seemed like they clicked in terms of finding their stage niche. Their popularity was really beginning to become a "thing" (with the passing of Jerry that summer, the scene was booming), Trey was arguably at his peak. Mastering his soulful, melodic playing with exploratory improv and risk taking. He was clean, sharp, on point but relaxed, comfortable and energized. He rarely had an off night and the rest of the band had no problem letting him run the show. Page wasn't just a "filler". Becoming a stand out in his own right. Fish was a fucking beast, playing tighter then just about ever before. And Mike seemed to always be locked in. All of these factors play into why MSG '9d is hailed as one of the best shows ever. December chronicles their climb to that peak. Classics such as Hood, Reba, Slave and YEM all are at their very best. But to be fair, every song is played with high energy and a spirit that hasn't been seen for sustained stretches of time before and not many times after. I highly suggest listening to every show this month as each day passes. I did this Dec. '11, and it was so fun. You're not even a week into December now and could easily catch up with a few off days. Enjoy diving in. Experiencing new Phish shows, during their hottest time periods is a real joy and treat.

callmethesloth @westbrook thanks for those reccomendations man, downloading Lakewood now(downloaded Mud Island just before it to check out that Tweezer especially). I knew I could count on you for some h3tty shows. @bostonron that does sound like a good idea, but I don't think I'd be able to do it. I explore era to era too often to listen to a whole tour at home I think. In a car on tour doing a road trip on the other hand.... maybe then. However I'll download that 12/11 and 12/2 show. I've heard good things about the 12/2 Tweezer. How was 12/11 @bostonron?

Summer Stage at Sugarbush, North Fayston, VT

Set 1: My Friend, My Friend[1] > Poor Heart > Run Like an Antelope, Loving Cup, Sparkle > It's Ice, If I Could, Maze, Strange Design, Free > Cavern

Set 2: Timber (Jerry) > David Bowie[2] -> Johnny B. Goode -> David Bowie[3], AC/DC Bag > The Lizards[4] > Big Black Furry Creature from Mars, A Day in the Life > Possum[5], The Squirming Coil

Encore: Simple, Amazing Grace

[2] Timber teases and lyrics in intro. God of Thunder (Kiss), Bathtub Gin and Soul Sacrifice teases.
[3] Johnny B. Goode teases from Trey.
[4] Aborted.
[5] Bathtub Gin and Johnny B. Goode teases.

Notes: My Friend featured Trey using his microphone stand as a slide. During If I Could, a large inflatable moose was tossed around the crowd. It landed in perfect sitting position, facing the audience, on Page’s side of the stage. The Bowie intro contained Timber teases and lyrics. Bowie later contained God of Thunder (Kiss), Bathtub Gin and Soul Sacrifice teases before segueing into Johnny B. Goode and Johnny B. Goode teases from Trey at the end of Bowie. Possum also contained Bathtub Gin and Johnny B. Goode teases. Lizards was aborted after Trey lost track of the lyrics. Fish teased him about needing a teleprompter and Trey started up Big Black Furry Creature from Mars. Plenty of stage antics preceded Amazing Grace; Page threw the pitch pipe into the crowd and Trey pretended to throw Fishman’s goggles and, eventually, Fishman himself. Trey also picked up a Hacky Sack from the stage and impressed the crowd with his athleticism. Timber returned for its first performance since December 30, 1992 (258 shows) and it was the first complete version since December 1989.

Don’t You Want To Go?, Lonesome Cowboy Bill, I’ll Come Running, and Gloria also made their first Phish public performances at this show. Reba did not have the whistling ending. Fish introduced the new songs that had been played before Lonesome Cowboy Bill. Fish explained that they didn't really have a name for the song after Ha Ha Ha and Trey added that since it was a Voters For Choice Benefit, they'd give the crowd four choices and let it vote on the title: The Plane, The First Signal, Israel, and Spock's Brain. Page subsequently teased the theme from Star Trek as the crowd voted for Spock's with Trey subsequently explaining the song's origin. Prior to Adeline, the crowd sang Happy Birthday to Page.

This was my first show, so I'm biased, but it stands up ridiculously good on tape. A great first set with a definitive version of Spock's Brain, a sweet Gin, an early Taste, and then set 2 features a full-tilt Mike's. Beautiful Slave encore that was acknowledged (whether consciously or not) in '11 on the same hallowed ground. Pales in comparison to some of the Fall tour shows, but east of the Mississippi in the summer of '95, it didn't get much better.

I've been doing this myself. Sometimes I'll miss a day, sometimes I'll listen to more than one show per day. Sometimes the show is so good I go back and listen to parts or the whole thing again, before moving onto the next show.

Last night, I listened back to most of the 2nd set of 12/5/95.

Then I listened to 12/7/95. I will prob listen to that show again (or at least it's higlights) before moving on to 12/8/95.

callmethesloth @MiguelSanchez Wow, just finishing up the Gin-> real me-> gin... Almost at a loss of words... easily a top 5 bathtub gin IMHO. Great stuff and great segued out of and back into it. What's in the middle is absolutely amazing. I'm almost tempted to listen to all of December 95 now.

Yeah. It's silly good. If you haven't listened to all of dec '95, I would highly recommend it. Every show has at least one outlandish jam. Most have more.

Sprachtor My go to shows are all the December shows unquestionably. My favorite stuff they ever played

But almost every single show has big stuff. 11-14, 7-1, Red Rocks, Dayton, Sick Tweezers Mud Island and Canadaigua etc etc

If you are listening you can't really go wrong with any 95 choice.

Really all shows have highlights.

But I grew up on the Deer Creek, Sugarbush, Great Woods, Philly, and Orlando shows.

The Binghamton show was supposed to be my first. I had about 20 friends go and I was supposed to go with them and skipped it. Big mistake.

callmethesloth @MiguelSanchez my 95 kick has been going good, also been exploring a lot of 94 and Europe 97 shows I never heard before. Killlller stuff. Still, in my recent findings, nothing touches the 12/29 gin> real me> gin jam that shits on another planet. However, I really liked the set w/ Del McCroury Band at Oswego. Also downloaded the Antioch, TN 2000 show to hear that awesome looking 2nd set, mainly the Hood> Dog Faced Boy> Hood sandwich

Speaking of those huge 95 mikes grooves, the mikes song from 12/7/95 is arguably my all time favorite. Such an.interesting piece of music
