I hope not.
mike says no
Personally, I'm fine with it if VA Beach remains it's own special thing and they never do another Dead tune. Otherwise it could slip into pandering mode pretty quickly.
If they were ever going to, I thought they might on 8/9/2010 (15th anniversary of Jerry's death). Failing that, I don't see it happening anytime soon, but you never know with this band.

I'm sure Mike wants to. He loves the Dead. I think they have done a great job of separating themselves and creating their own entity. Phish is Phish. Dead is Dead. There is no potential loss of identity this far in their career. 1990-1995? Maybe. That's when they were creating themselves.
I sure as hell would rather see a Jack Straw or China > Rider encore than Loving Cup at this point. I'm pretty sure the band as a whole appreciates and values the GD musically more than the Stones. Maybe I'm wrong? After watching this last night it makes me think a couple of things. Trey and the band want to emulate that same soulfulness they saw in the Dead, but they NEVER wanted to be called copycats. But who has? Everybody has called them the next generation Dead, but I have never heard anything calling them a GD ripoff, or GD cover band, etc.
All I'm saying is that I think they have distanced themselves enough now that they can pull it off.

A comment by Frizz was voted down. Show anyway
I second Scarlet Fire. That would be epic!
No. Fukin hell no. Anything but a lame ass Scarlet Fire.
I'll take a Wheel or a Franklin's Tower. Jammed out of course.
But like I said. No fukin way.
For the sake of the deads, and jerrys music it deserves to be covered by a band such as Phish.
Better Phish thand DMB (or band x) is my point...
as for phish themselves playing the dead. It is very sad to think of but at some point there will still be phish and there will be no more members of the dead. and i believe at that point in time is when phish will unleash a beautiful halloween addition of a gd album. and when that happens i dont want to hear anything but anthem of the sun. Sure they can play any gd tune and they can play it well but anthem screams type ll and is just a down right nasty raw album.
Wake of the Flood for Halloween. I'd shit myself (in a good way).and this is what im talking about. Phil and Friends just played this album in nj and as long as there are members still playing gd music i dont see phish trying to play gd tunes.

I would bet "yes" on this.
Harpua> Row Jimmy> Harpua

I hope not.I'm on board with that, with one exception: If they play their 1st show setlist at their 30th anniversary gig, Scarlet -> Fire included, it would lean toward the supafly end of the spectrum.
but I'd still just like a Breadbox or some other JGB
I would LOVE to see a Scarlet> Fire, or even just a Fire. But I don't see it happening, and that's just as well I guess. Hey, we'll always have this:

I think of The Mighty Quinn as a direct nod to the Dead. Jerry had made that tune his own. It was the last song I would ever hear him sing.

I spent years seeing the Grateful Dead. Further just doesn't do it for me. There's nothing wrong with paying homage to your roots. With a good 20-35% of all Phish shows consisting of covers, who could argue with a Shakedown St? Doesn't Phil play Wolfmans Brother? Why the stigma, peeps???The stigma has to do with the fact that the second cheapest hetty brah jamband thing to do is play Dead covers. It's a small step above juvenile sing-along lyrics about getting high. Yet, the songs are also too canonical to be appropriate for Henriettization.

I do love me some Scarlet Fire. But I'd take a Franklins or a Wheel any day. As long as they stay away from anything Vince sang. Samba in the Rain? God help us.NYE Set 3:

I often wonder if the "purity" might be more in the minds of the band than the fans. Whatever the reason, they just don't seem to want to go there.
Unnecessary, but it would be coolthe arena/shed would erupt, and before the show even ended wags would be here and in the venue calling bullshit on it all out of some misguided sense of Phish 'purity' that never existed. If the Phish played the Quinn anything like the Dead, I'd agree. The two bands' takes on the song are quite different.

Mikes > Help On The Way > Slipknot! -> I Am Hydrogen > Franklins Tower -> Weekapaug Groove would be super saucy. Especially if it was the entire second set.

Damn you @Potato_Sacks. Now I gotta change my shorts again.
I dont think they ever will but would love to hear them do the other one that IMO would be sick would be awsome to hear mike dropping some base bombs in the beginning like Phil used shakedown st would be sweet as well
I am a big fan of "loving cup" it was encore at my first show but I kind of agree with ^^^^ that a "Bertha", "dark star", "other one" ha ha would be pretty intense as a closer. I can understand wanting to separate from the dead, but it's year 30.
Conversely, If I want to hear dead covers ill go to a DSO show.
If anything... Jack fudgin Straw

If you want to hear mike dropping those bombs look that one up.
