Another NYE ticket scammer alert!

grevart Permalink
Calls herself Sasha, # 9174809267,

She Posted an ad on craigslist for $200 GA East floors 12/31. (NYC area). She texted me back and said she could meet me in the city tonight. So after a few texts regarding a meeting place and time, I typed one last thing :

"are you a phan or dealer? not that it matters, but lots of stories bout fake tix going around, and Ive been to lots of shows, so I will know if the tix are real or not. You seem legit though. Just didn't want to waste either of our time, .....so are the tickets real?"

.............She never texted me back and wouldn't respond to my texts or calls.

Jayem Not a really good scammer if all you had to do was ask "are they real tickets" and scared her away.

But seriously good looking out!

Are you absolutely positive it wasn't spelling fan "phan" that scared the person off?

Seriously though scalpers are a dime a dozen. Some of them might react badly if their personal info is thrown out there. Many aren't scamming, just trying to profit, right?

Those that are actually scamming will most often give you false info. What you're trying to do, alert others fans of people that are taking advantage, is good. But the way you're doing it might not be. Just saying.

Are you actually trying to buy tickets, or are you trying to out scalpers and scammers?

HARRYHOOD213 How about using this rule of thumb, ANYONE selling on Craig's List NYE tickets for $200 is a crook or go further, I would NEVER buy a Phish ticket off of Craig's List. If she truly had them, why wouldn't they be on Ebay for $400? I realize some poeple want to find a "Deal", but I wouldn't use Craig's list for that.

NoFIller Why would you even chance wasting money on a craigslist deal where there is no admin security? At least on Stubhub or feeBay the tix have to be real or you get your money back. Seems like a no brainer.

Ya Im trying to buy tickets. Stubhub they are $375 per at cheapest.
There are lots of legit people on craigslist selling tickets, and if I can
meet them, and verify the tickets are real. what's wrong with that?

You dont know they were fake. You THINK they were.

What can we do? Scammers gonna scam.

There are numerous options. The least confrontational would be doing nothing. The most extreme is probably murder/suicide. Pick somewhere in between?

Dropping these threads on PT is probably a better idea though. You'd have many people ready to go to bat if these are legit scammers. But if you f*** with someones life that isn't trying to steal, but instead just trying to make a profit....then you're in the wrong. I don't like scalpers but it's a business and until Phish finds a creative way to outlaw it, it's going to happen. We aren't changing it. Buy and sell for face, instead of looking to craigslist to overpay, supporting the scalper market, as you seem to be doing.

You're outing these people, some of them likely not guilty of your accusations, out of anger that you are struggling to get tickets. If I'm right about that, then there's nothing respectable about your efforts here.

What's "WRONG" is that is a HUGE RISK. Under no circumstances would I buy a Phish NYE ticket off Craig's list. If its not legit, your NIGHT IS SERIOUSLY RUINED.

OK. call her and buy her tickets, and then sell them to me. I'll give you an extra $100 for your efforts.

Also, PTBM (tickets with artwork) shouldn't be fake. It's the TM ones that are fake.

Forgot to mention that when I asked her to send me a pic of the tickets,
she said her phone doesn't have a camera.
And her story about why she couldn't go to the show ( broke up with boyfriend) is
totally different than her story on craigslist on why she can't go.

Just a heads up for all people trying to get NYE tix

Voyager @HARRYHOOD213: while I agree that buying tickets on Craigslist is risky, I have sold extras there before (for face and fees) in the days before CashOrTrade.org was around. Had to meet in person, cash only.

That being said I would use cashortrade before I tried anything else.

yoosmitty A fake TM ticket can be on REAL Ticketmaster stock. Everything about the stock (even perforated edges) will look real, and perhaps IS real. However, if you look at the ink, on a real ticket it is much, much darker and more uniform. On a fake ticket (but remember, real TM stock) the ink will look slightly lighter and perhaps even more "dot-matrix" even though it will look somewhat uniform.

[We compared our real TM at the entrance last year with the 10's of people hanging out with fake TM tickets, rejected at the gate.]

I've never heard of 3.0 PTBM being fakes, but I've been wrong many times. But, yes, of course they could be fake but doesn't make sense from an economies of scale perspective. If I'm going to scam people, I would get a hold of blank TM tickets so I can print Phish, Lady Gaga, and whoever else on those tickets. This is my understanding (through experience) of how the NY scammers work at least.

I've bought fake PTBMs and watched undercovers arrest the guys that sold them to me. Why just guess that fake PTBMs don't exist, and tell people that?

SicMD Here is the thing not to overlook when buying tickets........ even scammers can have real tickets to sell you... now we have this new bar code world...... in the old days they use to rip your tickets.. be very carefull.. In the event tickets get lost in the mail, all tickets can be voided and sent new ones out. the old tickets are real they just wont get you thru the door. Scan will be denied... another thing to realise that once a ticket gets you in the door someone could still come out of the show andsell a bunch of already used tickets.. they look real... Just be carefull. if someone is willing to sell you anything below its true real value were told to think its a scam. Those tickets could be real today... but as soon as she reports them stolen, code would be void and new tickets issued.

Like I said, I've never seen a fake 3.0 PTBM. Also, they don't have to be fake to be bunk, like SicMD said.

What's the back story with the arrest? When/where was this?
