Will the jamming continue?

somepothead Permalink
without question this past summer was the best of 3.0 when looking at the entire runn collectively. my question is will the band come back right where they left off? can we expect 20+ minute jams that we saw at dicks? mostly an opinion question but honestly what are your thoughts on the quality of the nye run.

What? That Piper on 12/30 didn't melt your face? Say what you will about the run as a whole but that was a magnificent jam.

Thissss... I was there. It was incredible. Best jam of the run IMO. But the run as a whole was not necessarily up to expectations. Lets home this year is different. I'm going the 30th again this year as well.

Precise my thinking as well. There are proper ways and proper places to voice those types of opinions.

This is not the proper place or the proper way to go about voicing that opinion.

Why you got to come in here so narrow minded and believe that your opinion on something Is a fact? While I respect the statement you made the last part of this post really eats at me... I feel as thought this is the problem with society people can't see two sides of the spectrum and only accept what they deem to be correct as what others should believe as well

There will be more than one, will it be on par with dicks light? That remains to be seen. If they go for it, well, that's all I can ask.

23piper 2012 sucked as a whole? Hardly. Still, leaving Dick's aside, there are several remarkable moments and lots of tight playing but I went to the 3 show run in SF and I recall feeling like there was definitely something missing from the first 2 nights. Going back through the whole tour, those 2 nights stand up well against all but the absolute indisputable highlights... so, my point, is that the average Phish show in 2012 was less impressive to me than the average Phish show from the 3 years previous. Strangely, the highlights of 2012 were also as interesting as anything in the past 3 years and some were up there with all time jams. So you take the good with the bad but 2012 had more than it's fair share of lackluster shows and there was definitely a lack of ignition throughout that was punctuated by exceptions, as opposed to the reverse.

Stop. Rewind. Play that back. Slower. OK, now spin it backwards and add a touch of Dick's. Dick's? Viva la Summer 2012!

Lots of practice might equate to lots of songs, and not necessarily lots of jamming.

They're playing 4 shows at a big city venue with a curfew. They have a massive catalog full of excellent material, and they're performing for thousands of paying customers who have a variety of favorites. That leaves only a finite amount of space for improv.

Although it's easy to forget when thinking about Dick's, length isn't everything. ;)

Exactly. Every show I've been iffy on at one point in time, after listening to it again, I've loved.

It's not only about 20 minute jams, it's the magic of the creation of that one point in time we all get to share in.

On the topic at hand - I don't really think of the New Year's shows as any sort of summation or continuation of the year, especially since the break between shows this year was so long (as well as last year). Some great jams of the BGCA Light or Dick's CDT or Long Beach R&R would be mostly appreciated, but if the shows are fun, then no harm, no foul. I know we all WANT them to be great, especially since we got so few shows this year and the quality was high, but it's entirely possible the band views the NYC run rather differently than we do, so IMO we shouldn't be too disappointed if our expectations and their musical product do not match up.

That being said, if we don't get another jam on the level of the St. Louis LxL, I am destroying everything in my apartment in pure rage.

EducateFright Permalink
EducateFright I can appreciate just about every era of Phish, be it the zany hollow funk of the 80s, the ultra-tight early 90s with Trey's over-the-top machine-gun shredding, the markedly dissident/psychedelic heavy metal of 94, the cow funk, the groove-based jamming of 2000 (think 15-minute Sand)... Due to a gap in actively listening to Phish shows and living abroad, I'm not too familiar with early 3.0. But I do like what they are doing now, which is more or less a calculated balance of most of the styles I've listed here. I like it as much as anything else. I've heard some jams that sound like nothing else (6/4/2011 Sally at Blossom, for example). Given the fact that they aren't getting any younger, they are truly kicking ass.
To answer the original question of the thread, I'd guess that in the near future we will continue to hear more along these lines.
