organizing your phish library

chalk2001 Permalink
chalk2001 Call me anal but I enjoy reorganizing my phish library. Spent good amount of time last night organizing all my phish by date, including all the Live Phish series.

So, something like this:

2012-06-08 - Worcester, MA
1997-11-17 - Live Phish 11 - Denver, CO

etc, etc.

However, I found that most of the songs got shuffled as a result of me renaming the albums in iTunes. I tried fixing this by assigning track numbers but they still won't budge. Any ideas here? I know some of you HAVE to be in the same phish-OCD boat as me.

This is my biggest gripe with iTunes. Apple is smarter than this. We live in 2012...not 1999...I believe this would be an industry-defining characteristic of music applications in this day and age. It SHOULD be able to recognize album names, and have some sort of uniform order for organization. All of my Phish stuff is so jumbled in this sense- (date)-(location) or (location)-(date) or (Live Phish x)-(Location)-(Date), (Date)-(Live Phish x)-(Location), etc.

And on top of that, upon recognizing the album, after cross referencing with internet source/iTunes library, the songs should be in the correct order. Don't they have programmers working day in and day out trying to do innovative things like this?

I believe there is some sort of 3rd party app that can do this. I've seen it advertised somewhere. Anybody have any experience with it? To a certain extent, from previous disasters, I don't like screwing around with my music because of the risk of deletion, erased track info, etc.

I won't upgrade to the new itunes because of how much I love the display and search functionality in the current version. I also have album art for everything in my itunes.

I'm with you @skiguy, but to a point. I like playlists but when I load music on iphone, for instance, I like having the WHOLE album. I dunno, its just me. I do have a playlist or two that has all of my favorite Phish/Dead/other jam bands but thats it.

@Phrank518 - good idea about the 3rd party apps. I think I remember seeing one of those around.

@harroldhood - shuffled as in the tracks show up in the master itunes library out of order. For instance, the first two songs in 1997-11-17 are Tweezer then Reba, but once I renamed the album it put Tweezer as the second song and Reba's like the 7th or 8th song down. You can mark a track as "track 2 out of 15" but even after I do that, iTunes still doesn't put them in the right order.

Like I said, ANAL.

is usually how I do it. If there's something special about the show (ie. "The Great Went" or "Island Tour" ;) , I'll add a ( ) at the end to make it easier to single out songs in iTunes search. Always worked for me and looks real nice, too.

My point is that you make playlists that are the complete album label them as such and bam!

If you click the part of compilation box in the info section, it should reorganize them to the correct order.

Drgordy All mine are by date as well except for the live phish series and studio albums. I know what you're talking about with some tracks out of order no matter what you try. It happened to my long beach '12 show. I can't figure it out, but it must have to do with an extra character or a space in the listing.

ahull13 I usually organize my library like this: 2012-12-28 New York, NY. I also like to put album artwork on every song if I can find it. All of my studio versions of songs have lyrics on them. I rate songs too, for example, my rating system is 1-2 stars is "not worth another listen", 3 stars is "average version", 4 stars is "worth another listen", and 5 is "listen at any time". I take pride in my work haha.

Penn42 I have iTunes 10.7 and use the grid view and I name my albums as such: 2012-08-31 - Dick's blah blah blah. Whenever I search my results are always in order of the next level of specificity. So if I search "2012", my shows will be in order by month then day. No matter what I search, when I click on the album to bring up the list of songs, the songs are always in order. The only thing that would make them not come up in order is if I don't have the track numbers filled in, but I always do that. So maybe you should do that if you haven't. Otherwise, I don't know why you're experiencing that problem.

It sounds like when you renamed the album you used the same name for multiple discs in the same album. You need to create different names for each disc (ie add a set 1 or "I" ) or renumber all off the tracks. If you don't, you'll have multiple track 1s, 2s, etc in the same album, which causes the tracks to be jumbled.

spanishmoon You have to organize by show and set. Like @beach said. I also noticed when I go into the song info and change something, itunes won't organize the music till I leave the page and come back. I either scroll down and then back up or close iTunes and reopen it. When I come back everything is usually where I want it.

I would be confident to say that my phish library is one of the more organized libraries on .net.

I dont put up with one spelling error, one date error, every day is written in the exact same format. Every single MP3 has the correct artwork that is sized perfectly.

Here is my format

Year/month/day Venue Name - City, State
1998/4/3 Nassau Coliseum - Uniondale, NY

All other MP3's are correclty titled like Hampton/Winston-Salem '97

My LivePhish series is formated like so
LivePhish, Vol. 1 12/14/1995 (Broome County Arena, Binghamton, NY)
