R.I.P John Lennon (12-8-80)

MJZ1974 Permalink
MJZ1974 I was a little boy, but I remember my mom losing it when Howard Cosell announced this on Monday Night Football. Not old enough to grasp the severity of it, but old enough to remember.

John was the first of many public figures I remember being shot around this time. It seemed like there was one every 6 months. First John, then President Reagan, then Pope John Paul II, It seemed like it was happening all the time.

32 years later...and we still never gave peace a chance. Maybe one day...

gladtobeaglenn Awesome thought. I was old enough to realize what a trajedy that was. The Beatles were my first musical addiction - back in the 60's bands put out new albums about once a year, so the anticipation was pretty intense. Of all the people that piece of scum had to shoot he picks my first musical hero. F him. But yeah, honor John today and try to listen to at least one Beatle tune. I'm going with I Am The Walrus.

John Lennon has been my hero for as long as I can remember. I have been to the Dakota/Strawberry Fields many years on this day. It is always a sad but joyous occasion. There is singing and dancing and laughing. There is always a moment of silence when you hear cars going by and people weeping.

I wish John had lived. I often think about how the world might be different if he had, however, his message is out there. It is now our job to hear it and share it.

For all the good he put out, he was no angel. He had his demons and he wasn't shy about them. I think this is a valuable lesson we can all learn from him. Despite where you have been and what you have done you can always change and be a force for peace.

Thank you John Lennon. You will live for ever in our hearts and minds.

DrPeterVenkman I was eight years old and remember thinking, "Hey, that's the 'Wheels' guy", I loved that song. I didn't see Monday Night Football the night before, but I remember getting up and hearing Bob Jameson from NBC telling me. I remember getting to school and seeing some of the teachers looking absolutely punch drunk.
In GM.N this morning I said "Man, we sure are good at killing our idols, he's too to good, I love him, let's kill it"

missblue75 I was 5 when it happened. I remember the images on tv, I remember the feeling of sadness. My mom wasn't a huge fan, but she was fan enough to cry, and that stuck with me.
I really love John. Bring On the Lucy is a song that makes me stop everything and just listen. His voice, cadence, tenor, whatever it is, just touches me right about...there.
RIP... I wish everyone could see to your dream... imagine that.

Jimmymac03 @careful_w_that_axe_Miller I took the time to read your link. There is a lot wrong there. Thanks for bringing such extreme negativity into an other wise positive thread of remembrance on the day of his death. One example, the author complains of Lennon doing nothing politically. Well, he was not a politician. Also, he spent a lot of time during the '70s living in America where he would not be allowed into politics even if he wanted to.

As I said in my first post in this thread, the man certainly had demons. However, unlike most in this world he acknowledged them and tried to be a force for peace despite them.

Funny, I opened this thread playing this on my acoustic, seems appropriate. I'll be sure to spin Beatles and Lennon solo albums all day. I was born long after he died, but music trancends existence on the physical plain, he is a great inspiration to me as a musician and advocate of peace. R.I.P.

Very well said. When you consider the Iran hostage crisis, USA hockey and the gas crisis it was an unnerving time to be a kid. I was getting ready for my tenth birthday and I remember hearing my mother scream and raced downstairs to see her crying in the den in front of the TV.

He had a universal message of hope and was intelligent enough to use his celebrity, even squander and tarnish his image as some thought, to fight for peace. The fact that he cared more about peace than his legacy as a Beatle speaks volumes, regardless of how much of a jerk he may have been. He was not perfect, but none of us are.

The U.S. vs John Lennon is a very good doc about his post-Beatles life as an activist and public enemy #1 of the FBI and US government. It covers everything from the Richard Sinclair rally to his fight against deportation.

Jimmymac03 My personal favorite Lennon song.

God is a concept by which we measure our pain. I'll say it again...

edit: I think it worth noting, for those like Miller, who may not get John Lennon. He was a window. His art was a constant window to his beliefs and thoughts. This song states all the things he does not believe in... all things he once believed in. He did a lot of changing for a short life. He was a man who lived 10 lives in his one.
