8/17/96 II - best Type I set ever?

andrewrose Permalink
andrewrose Just listened to this old classic set again, had been a while. Was a go-to tape for me in the late 90s and now I remember why. Funny thing is, there's little to possibly no Type II jamming in this set. The Runaway Jim does go on for a while, but doesn't really go 'out' ... and the Antelope and Slave have long builds as they almost always do, but nothing I'd call Type II. But for a set with virtually no real opened-ended exploration (and no segues either, though there are some very smooth >s), this is just killer, killer Phish. These are all time versions for Fluffhead, Antelope and Slave, easily. Trey just absolutely annihilates the peaks on each one. If you haven't spun this in a while, do it front to back this weekend and thank me later.

Anyway, got me wondering. Is there a better in-the-box set (so to speak) of Phish out there?

westbrook It is a great set. One of my favorite versions of It's Ice as well. If you're saying it's the best set without any type 2 jamming, I agree.

Edit - Although, the three sets of 12/31/93 don't really have much type 2 in them either, and that's my favorite show.

andrewrose Yeah 12/31/93 is a good call. I mean obviously pre-94 it's much more likely to occur. Certainly hard to think of a set from 94 onwards with so little exploration and yet so much fire.

fishman4 Same thing with halloween '94 really, and that's my favorite show ever. The Divided Sky really does go "out there" but definitely not type 2.

mellifluouslife If it isn't, it's sure up there. This was a go-to tape for me as well. The OP mentioned Fluff, Antelope and Slave as all-timers and I agree. During every listen I've always marvelled at how so many BIG songs were played in the same set with such ferocity and crispness. They're extraordinary and stand-up to any versions from any era. To have played them in the same set is Phish.

I've always regarded this as one of the best sets the band has EVER played and would be on a short list of sets/shows that are must listens and would be one of the first things I'd play to introduce someone to the live phish experience.

I had the good fortune to have attended the clifford ball, and from the minute that set ended through today, I still say that's the best set of phish I've ever seen or heard.
