Paul McCartney and Nirvana

Jerrytheband Here's that song for anyone who missed it. I thought it was great

jerryguscia I didn't like the slide guitar, it make it sound like that new weird country sound Lynyrd Skynyrd has going on now. Paul McCartney's grunge singing was pretty rad though.

Good for you, but Paul was playing a Cigar Box Guitar.

A bit more surprisingly, McCartney’s instrumental contribution came on a humble cigar-box guitar he played with a slide. The guitar, as it happens, was made here in the Southland by cigar-box guitar aficionado Matty Baratto, whose Cigfiddle creations were featured in a story I wrote last year about a modern-day revival of interest in the homespun cigar-box guitar tradition.

Baratto’s instruments have made their way into other famous hands, including those of Keith Richards and Johnny Depp, and present-day cigar-box players also include ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons and rocker Steve Miller.

n00b100 This was quite good IMO. As incredibly unlikely as this is, I'd really like to see a small run of shows where Grohl/Novoselic/Smear back McCartney through his hits (and maybe a few Nirvana songs...????); it's pretty clear the band still have their chemistry. I don't think a full tour would be practicable, sadly.

It's pretty amazing how Grohl can still go like the old days 20 years after Nirvana's untimely end - I guess limiting his drumming to guest spots and other musicians' sessions have helped keep him fresh.

The cigar box guitar is a primitive chordophone that uses an empty cigar box for a resonator. "Guitar" refers to the traditional instrument and to a string bass. The earliest predecessors had one or two strings; the modern model typically uses three or more. Generally speaking, strings are connected between the end of a broomstick or 1" x 3" wood slat and to the resonator, the cigar box.

I don't know man, maybe I'm jaded but I don't think they really need to be performing as a Nirvana reunion without Kurt Cobain.
