Steam gag had me worried

Andrewishomer Permalink
Andrewishomer I couldn't help but be worried during the Steam gag last year.

A bunch of people and items on harnesses, coming from the wrestling world, I was thinking that something bad might happen.

It didn't ruin it for me, but I was constantly looking up and hoping that no mistakes were made.

I think that stunt put everyone involved, including the band and phans, in danger really.

Awesome jam and Steam though for sure.

UbiquitousSmokey the image on .net homepage the other day of mike on the stand raised up above the stage made me think similar thoughts.

put trey and mike in easy positions to get hurt if something went wrong.

Not a wrestling fan but cetainly aware of the Owen Hart tragedy.
Well I have way more faith that the people involved with the Phish stunt were way more knowledgeable and careful than the WWE will ever be with anything, but still... It was a dangerous stunt. One wrong move and it could have been really bad.

Drgordy Watching the gag from behind stage it looked like they took safety seriously. Mike and Trey were harnessed into the pedestals so that it was impossible for them to fall.

That was probably the L talking... er, seeing.

Seeing as they have wives and kids, I'm guessing that safety might have snuck into the planning at some point.

aSTRANGEdesign i read somewhere that they started planning almost a year in advance, then rehearsed for 40 hours. Several items that they used for the stunt were built specifically for phish... so they obviously had all the kinks worked out.

Do people seriously like wrestling AND phish? I mean, I used to like wwf as a kid but seems like an interesting combination to me.

I hate wrestling and have for many years, but was raised by the business, until I met my Phish friends.

During one of the nights of the Dick's run this summer, every piece of CK5's light rig was swaying HARD in the wind. It might have been the L talking, but I was seriously worried about the band and audience close to the stage (including myself).

SmokeBehindTheMountain They wouldn't do any of it without practices and safety harnesses. Ever been to a broadway show or something where the actors are lifted up high? They are all professionals and it's New York man! Enjoy the show

They had consultants from the Spiderman broadway production to help with the planning and set-up. Nobody was ever in any grave danger

Last year I stood in line as the Radiohead stage fall and killed a drum technician. Now every time I go to a concert I can't stop myself from glaring at the overhead stage setup, making sure everything looks "right".

Just look at the tragedy from this past weekend. Crazy shit that everyone thinks CANT HAPPEN, does acutally happen sometimes...

There were 4 accidents but nobody died. Also I hate to sound like a jerk or dismiss broked wrists and concussions but they learned alot from those accidents and put lots of additional safety procedures in place.

Full disclosure: I work on Broadway and with alot of the people involved in this show.

CornFromAJar After seeing the "Steam" gag last year (GORGEOUS!), and then going back (in my head) over all the 3.0 NYE gags (BRILLIANT!), I thought back to 2003 in Miami and remembered how anti-climactic it seemed to me, even at the time! The high school marching band, the clown car, Jungle Boogie......MEH. All the signs were there....this was the beginning of the end! :-/ The bunnies were fun to watch, though. ;-)
