Swept Away->Steep

Jerrytheband Permalink
Jerrytheband A thread for 2 great songs. Discuss

Capricornio Permalink
Capricornio Swept Away is ok. Not really a fan of Steep at all. Wouldn't refer to either as a "great" song.

DanceTheJig728 Love this pair so so much. I'll never forget at SPAC 3 when they slid into Steep, a Chinese latern went up in the air on the lawn near me and it was just a very special moment for me. I think it works very well as a cool-down in the middle of a crazy second set. Some of my favorites are

11/18/96 coming out of my favorite Simple
12/7/97 It's Ice-> Swept> Steep> Ice
Score: 5

Potato_Sacks Permalink
Potato_Sacks I love to see you talking so highly of the 11/18/96 Simple Tim. So f***ing crunchy.

My first introduction to the 2 was this.
Also who doesn't love a blood-curdling scream

The peak is one of the most glorious things my ears have every experienced.

On a side note and not to threadjack, just got your check in the mail today! You're actually going to be getting like $25 bucks back after we did some number crunching but we'll discuss that when were all together.

Sweet glad everything worked out!
That 25 bucks is gonna be awesome since money is real tight around this time. That will come in mucho handy going to Dead Sessions on Sunday if that ends up going down, I'd like to see them w/ the Vermont Allstars.

highhat I loved this pairing in 1.0! I am not a fan of Steep's new arrangement; miss the scream.

Favorite version played: 1999/6/30, segued from Simple

westbrook Studio version is my favorite.

kipmat Permalink
kipmat I like both the old and new arrangements. Back in the day, I came up with a theory that the second half of the Billy Breathes album, starting with Bliss, was a narrative about the path of oxygen in the air, breathed into the lungs, and then back into the atmosphere. Swept Away-> Sweep would take place when the oxygen was in the blood, and ending as the oxygen returned to the lungs, as we listened to the sound of the heart pumping blood.
C'mon, it's a decent theory. :)

Jerrytheband How about this Mike's Groove

Looks2Much Permalink
Looks2Much I love these two songs... I have always wished they'd take one steep for a ride, it has a lot of ambient jam potential--I could see it getting off into the darker, soupier sides of Tweezer if they let it morph.

one of my favorite transitions ever. swept> steep was perfect here, just a brilliant escape from the chaos of the song that preceded the pairing, Swept> Steep was a much needed breather during a heavy hitting Its Ice.

bostonron I love this pairing. Always have. Can't forget about this little jam tacked onto the end of Steep. Could have really gone somewhere...

Saratoga Performing Arts Center, Saratoga Springs, NY

Set 1: Brother, AC/DC Bag > Back on the Train, Undermind, Cities, Gotta Jibboo[1], Roggae, Sleep Again, Lawn Boy, Run Like an Antelope[2]

Set 2: Carini > The Mango Song > Wilson[3], Drowned > Swept Away > Steep, Makisupa Policeman[4], Piper[5] > Also Sprach Zarathustra > You Enjoy Myself[6]

Encore: Frankenstein[7]

[1] Tony Markellis on bass and Mike on a second guitar.
[2] "Mike-O Esquandolas" lyric; bass solo.
[3] Dixie tease from Trey.
[4] Improvised verses by Trey that led to solos by Mike, then Fish, then Page.
[5] Intro contained phrases from the previous Makisupa.
[6] Whole Lotta Love quote from Trey.
[7] Page on keytar.

Notes: In what is becoming a Father's Day tradition (see 6/21/09), the show-opening Brother featured the band members' children jumping into a bathtub on stage, followed by Trey introducing each of them and wishing everyone a Happy Father's Day. Gotta Jibboo featured Tony Markellis on bass and Mike on a second guitar. In Antelope, "Marco Esquandolas" was changed to "Mike-O Esquandolas," followed by a Mike solo. The end of Wilson contained a Dixie tease from Trey. In place of a traditional Makisupa keyword, Trey improvised verses that set up solos for Mike, then Fish, then Page. The subsequent Piper intro included repeated phrases from the Makisupa ("Policeman," "House," and "Listen to Mike"). Trey quoted Whole Lotta Love in the vocal jam of YEM. Page performed Frankenstein on keytar.

great drowned> swept away steep segment. I'm pretty sure it's on Vimeo in proshot also.
