Phish bond stronger than a sports rivalry?

treysoldguitar Permalink
Just a random thought I had. I'm a big Yankees fan, and I usually hate most things Boston if only for that reason. Only time I went to Fenway Park was when I saw the Phenway show.

That being said, do people in the show hate on each other if they see others repping a rival sports team i.e. if you saw Yankee fans at the Phenway show or Red Sox fans at MSG?

My inclination is that Phish is bigger and better than sports rivalries, so if I see you Red Sox fans wearing your Ortiz jerseys or Red Sox hats, I'll still high five ya.

Would you do the same???

I don't know, but if they do it would be pretty silly. Just like it is outside of a Phish show.

GrooveHolmes Nah I dose rape any Sox fan I see.

For the serious answer, I keep my sports rivalries pretty well in perspective anyway. A little ribbing is fun, but I never take it too serious. It's just a game. There does seem to be less hostility between Boston and New York at shows though. Cats and dogs living together.

@IntoYesterday that gif is cracking me up.

the_Crested_Hogchoker I think a very high percentage of people claim to be sports fans so they're not left out of the loop around the water cooler at work. Phish is more of a cult following with strong spiritual implications and some social awareness mixed in. Its a superior bond imo.

YorkvilleBeerLover I learned long ago no matter how much I root for my team, and how much I would attack others - I myself do not affect/effect the outsome of any sporting event. I learned this lesson very well in 2004 when we were up 3-0 - and then walked out of Yankee Stadium Game 7 a broken man.

Since that day I don't hate anymore. Not worth it. No one on the field cares.

The Red Sox/Yanks thing died that day for me. I can't believe how tame it is inside the stadium these days - you cant even wear Boston Sucks shirts.

The Redskins have played maybe 2 meaningful games in December for the last 20 years. Now they are playing the biggest game in recent history the same night as phish.

How have people dealt with this scenario in the past? And why hath the Lord our God forsaken me? Im either gonna be annoying constantly checking-phone guy or annoying dbag who keeps running to the nearest tv-screen guy.

I realize a lot of people will roll their eyes and tell me that "sports are dumb" and "football is the devil"....so I wanna give a preemptive "kiss my grits" to those people.

My thoughts are as follows: 28,29..30 at FedEx. I initially bought a train ticket for 3am sunday morning to make it back for the game which was at 1...might change it, might not. No matter how hard Phish is thrashing there is no chance I would EVER miss a December game, at fed ex, vs the cowboys, for the division...

I love sporting skins gear at shows. I will be wearin my @landlady vultures skins shirt one night and another skin shirt of some sort the other night. You better believe if I saw someone wearin cowboys gear (@phrisky) at MSG I will let them know what's up.

I haven't missed a home game this year (3 years running) and the thought of not being there for the biggest game in dc since 1999 makes me shudder. I will rage jut as hard on the 30th then I will 28 and 29.

Hail to the Phish, hail to the redskins

Thats a solid plan. And a killer weekend. If I had tix for both the game and the show, I would be going to the game. But Im not insane enough to sell my phish ticket just to stay home and watch the game on TV. Its just annoying because neither phish nor the Skins will have my full attention on sunday night. f***ing flex schedule.

Make sure you get inside Fedex early!

I get what tebowie is saying. Some people like "music", and then some people like bands or artists. The difference is, the people who like music can have an educated discussion about it. They can reference bands and arists from the past and have a good knowledge of different genres. They may also have knowledge of music itself, and know what melody is. They understand what you mean when you say a song has dynamics.

The fans of artists or bands can tell you everything about their favorite group, but couldn't really give you any sort of reason WHY they love that band that has anything to do with music.

I tend to leave sports stuff away from Phish, besides some light joking or ribbing in the lot. Although i did have a plan to bring a big tinfoil stanley cup to the burgettstown show(if we won it) and trying to get it crowd-surfed to the front(although im sure fans would've hated that, i think the joke would've been worth it).
