Music for the NYE meetup.

12Next →View All

Jimmymac03 Permalink
Jimmymac03 Just wanted to start a discussion about the music for the meetup. Please feel free to put requests in this thread and share ideas for how to get all the music together.

I think as far as live suggestions go we should keep it to anything available as a SBD recording. I actually have most of summer '12 from LivePhish and a lot of the highlights from '11 so I could easily supply anything from those years. I also have moe. and Umphrey's selections but not much in SBD.

As for any Grateful Dead requests, I have an ungodly amount of their music so there is a good chance I have anything you might suggest from them.

I also have a ton of classic rock stuff. Allman Bros, Neil Young, Beatles, Stones, Floyd, etc so I could also supply that kind of shizzle.

I am a big singer songwriter fan as well. Martin Sexton, Tom Freund, Brett Dennen, Ray Lamontagne, etc. I got it all.

I would ask someone to help me with other areas I am lacking though. I know many people here enjoy EDM. This is not a genre I am into so I don'thave much to offer. If there are free downloads I could certainly grab stuff and put it on the mix though.

Anyway, not sure what the best way to handle this all is, but figured we should start talking about it. If we wanted to get all the music on one iPod I certainly could make that happen, I would just need legal download links or some other way of getting the music to me.

Discuss...

brfarrell I am not making the trip (no tickets, yet) but I just want to say how awesome of an idea all of this is. It really makes me feel like a part of a community. If you wouldn't mind, play Light Up Or Leave Me Alone from SPAC '12 for me.

Thanks.

johnnyd Thanks @jimmymac03.
Glad that this can be delegated. As a thought, if you get more volunteers, you dont have to have it all on 1 ipod, you can certainly switch it out.

I'll definitely be chiming in on this thread, but don't give my comments any more weight than anyone else's. For starters:

I'm also one to generally listen to no or little phish day of show.
All about some old hip hop, b-boys, ambient phish if any, thievery, a modest dose of noodly hippie shit, or a nice deep house lounge atmosphere.

I love you @cupuscakus, but Pretty Lights sucks my nuts.

Jimmymac03 More than one pod is def a good idea. Maybe someone who has a good amount of music in their collection that I don't have please chime in.

Beastie Boys are a must. @Johnnyd when I lived in NY my boss was neighbors with Adrock in SoHo. Met him a couple times. Mostly just when his cat was fighting my bosses dog.

I am okay going no Phish if that is what the majority wants. I do usually listen to Phish day of, pumps me up. But I know I may be in the minority on that.

Please include specific songs with you band requests! If I don't know the band I don't want to guess at what their more popular tunes are.

bostonron I understand I'm in the way minority, so take this for what it's worth, but I am NOT a GD fan. At all. Besides that, The Dead just don't see like pre-Phish rage music to me. Maybe because I just don't like them, but they are just too mellow for me.

I'm pretty flexible when it comes to music (obviosuly, this applies to GD too, I was only being honest). I do love me some Soulive, Lettuce, The Meters, anything funky seems to fit as good background music, while still affording people to bust a move if they feel so inclined.

Dj Shadow (Diminshing Returns), DJ Krush (Oumupo 6), Nightmares On Wax (Carboot Soul) and Kruder and Dorfmeister (The K&D Sessions) provide some chill background music as well. And again, with funky beats to get a booty or two shaking.

Just my $0.02

johnnyd LOL. Make sure to wear them to the show.

I have no idea why, but that is occasionally a thing at club shows. Chumps walking around with dj headphones. "Dude. I know who's playing tonight. And its not you. Do you think there's gonna be some kind of emergency and you're gonna get called into service?"

Like "Oh my god, this person is hurt! Is there a doctor on board???"

johnnyd @jimmymac03 - so are you planning on a huge playlist to put on shuffle or actually doing a sequenced playlist?

I'd probably suggest the former. less work, and the drops between styles could be fun and amusing.

Anyway, I'm pulling a handful of tracks to either burn and send you or dropbox. But if you're doing the former, I'll send a bigger pile. If the latter, more focused.

You're gonna hate all this computer music, but you're little girl will be dancin round the living room ; )

johnnyd A little hip-hop is sneaking in, but its largely electronic. Not that I'd want to subject any unwilling victims to 100% of this, but if it sneaks in for 10%-20% of the setlist, I think it would work.

But point being I have a ton of old hip hop and b-boys and this and that that i assume a lot of other people will have too. So I'm just kicking some of this other stuff out that few if any dotnetters probably have.

Jimmymac03 Thanks @Johnnyd!!

Anyone who wants to add to the mix please send me some specifics. Bands, songs and where I can download or obtain. Drop box is great, snail mail can work too if you get it out soon. Let's make the music something we all love. I really dig the idea of a communal .net mix. Even if not for the meetup, we all have damn good taste in music and can turn each other on to new things.
