Please help my student...

Lemuria Phish.net Staff Permalink
Lemuria I have a graduate student who's studying the presentation of self in online settings for her Master's Thesis. She has a SurveyMonkey tool (which I've reviewed and approved), and I hope you'll consider loaning a few moments of your time to her project - and I'll owe you thanks for it! :)

No Facebook = no participation?

I guess since I'm not on Facebook I can't speak to the presentation of self in online settings....

DoctorGreenberg I would recommend extending the survey beyond Facebook, or using non-FB people as a control group. Just a thought

P.S. It was really cool to meet you at Hudson Yards! :)

Here's the direct link, @Jacculus - would love your help, and anyone else's... BUMP!

Thanks for the direct link @lemuria. I tried to take the survey but couldn't get past the 3rd question that requires the subject to have a Facebook account. As is the case in my everyday life, I have been shunned for not being on Facebook. Please don't think less of me.

Lemuria Great to meet you, as well, @curleyfrei!

@DoctorGreenberg, there are a number of ways to expand this or any study - and other ways it could be narrower (or less precise) still (including some I recommended). But I *think* it's a well-defined and -bounded data collection effort, and should lend to some interesting analysis and, perhaps, generalizations.

But it's far afield from the coming Mockingbird Omnibus Phish Survey. As an Associate Professor of Sociology, with nearly 20 years experience teaching (especially survey) research methods and many years of experience in several survey research settings (both academic and community/applied), I can assure you that what's coming will be comprehensive, professional, useful, user-friendly, enlightening, and more.

This has been in planning stages for many years, and has even gone through several levels of field testing. There have been smaller, even regular, surveys of fans about some topics, but this is something bigger, in design and scope - not quite a Census of Phish fans, since there's not a clearly delineable population, and not exactly like NORC's General Social Survey, since it will be online. But it's no less ambitious. The all-volunteer, phan-driven nonprofit that's documented the band and its music for years, is about to shine some light on the fans. And you'll be included, too, @Jacculus - sorry you aren't here.

As I've said already, nearly every hour of 2013: It's gonna be a BIG year! :)

Seems like it would have benefitted from some more background questions, like how often you use fb for, what other social media you use, for what purposes you use fb. Some people pour their hearts out, some people just go for the lulz, some to keep up a social calendar, etc. Seems like this would make a difference in what version of you you'd present.

The way the bulk of it is framed, how you present yourself vs. how you want to present yourself, etc...kinda seemed like splitting hairs. Tough questions to differentiate if you dont have the self awareness of, say, a masters candidate in sociology.

Be interested to see what she gleans from the info.

Full disclosure: I am a n00b and suck at teh sociologeez

TheArgus done.

It's hard to write surveys that require respondents to be introspective, she did a good job. You are also a kind man for letting her use survey monkey to collect data, my marketing research professor made us use paper surveys for our big projects so we would have to learn how to manually enter all data into SPSS to analyze the results. She is an evil woman.....

@Lemuria. how much longer is she keeping the survey open? I can get a few of my professors to spread it around if that would help. To a bunch of college kids with facebook accounts who are empathetic to getting survey responses.
