I tend to favor jams of the SPACEY nature. PSYCHEDELIC jams that exhibit a prolific quality in AMBIANCE or ATMOSPHERE. CREATIVENESS is also an important factor. I like when Phish BREAKS NEW GROUND, or furthers previous THEMES.
If you could choose just one song from any show in 2012 that exemplifies what I have described, you would be doing a fantastic thing for me.
P.S.
I'm a big fan of when Mike makes the "BBBAAAAAOOOWWWWW" sound. Not sure how much of that is still happening, but i'm sure they've progressed with that sort of thing in some way. He always knows the right time to make that sound. That's the time I'm looking for.
I've made similar threads in the past but they're out-dated.
THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It is a year to remember.
But another example, which is a jam I always rave about is 7/3 Golden Age.
So not too much of this Ambient-Phish-Realm came out at MSG huh? Bummer. All I really got last year out of every MSG show was Cities and Piper. Maybe MSG just isn't the right occasion for this sort of thing.
First show of summer tour seems to deliver this type of sound. At least the last two summers.
I'm surprised I don't hear talk about this type of stuff more. Seems to me like such a huge part of the experience.
09/01/12 Light would be the first place to start, then listen to 08/31/12, then 09/02/12.
i feel a lot of this comes down to trey playing with more patience. he seems to just simply let things come to him. i noticed this in a big way at the first show i saw this year, blossum. quality wise, i consider this to be toward the lower end of shows i've seen, but seeing and hearing the way trey navigated through ghost and golden age was fantastic.
also, fishman is finally sounding like his old self. the man is a freaking beast, and he certainly was not all the way back to form in '09 and '10. this band CAN NOT jam if fish is not on point. fishman is back baby.

i think 2012 has been a benchmark year. they have really melded together a lot of their "previous styles" and turned them into a new and fresh thing. you get some of that layered/electronic feel of '99, the space funk of '97, the balls to the wall psychedelia of '94-'95... great stuff.Agreed 100%, and it all started with OP's only show of the year, 06/07/12. That was the show when I knew this time was gonna be different.
