Of all the G words and songs they had to choose from...
I have to assume the band had no idea the last 2 years started with M and S, a coincidence. But perhaps learning of the fans speculation with the G word, and many somehow still saying Gamehenge, they decided they would have some fun.
Kung is the chant that starts Gamehenge, so there was another tease. Garden Party opener. Choosing Golf as the theme was no random choice, they put some thought into it.
Eh?

A+
Indefinitely
Also to be noted is the possibly intentional stop start on Driver. Otherwise known as a re-do, or "Mulligan." Phish did some pretty hardcore trolling last night.

I didn't absorb all of this until today, and I was totally sober and watching the webcast. PT had to point some of this out. Pretty awesome what the band did last night. The gag keeps getting more and more impressive when you think of it this way.

Phish did some pretty hardcore trolling last night.I was thinking about this, and it seemed a bit too far-fetched, but honestly, why WOULD Trey have so much trouble with the opening to Driver and then make a big show about finally getting it right? I think you're on to something here...
A+ Phish, bravo!
@IntoYesterday said:Agreed. I remember thinking it was odd. They rarely restart songs and usually opt to flub their way into it.Also to be noted is the possibly intentional stop start on Driver. Phish trolled us hard kids.
I can't even imagine what's on deck for next year's gag.
'twas a mighty fine Garden Party- funny because that was the theme to our wedding last year and this was our 1st NYE show together. How do they know?
They intentionally tease gamehenge by not playing any songs from it the whole run (besides bag), the whole "garden party" set up, and then opening up the gag with kung. Then what do they do, they have a runaway golf cart marathon to the tune of chalk dust torture instead. Then they play a "golf set" including an awesome fly like an eagle. Wilson then teases a gamehenge set again, but finds a way to fit into the golf theme. Then page discusses phish getting older and middle aged which again ties into the golf theme and when you think theres no more golf-themed songs to be played, they encore with iron man. Hilarious. Corny. Genius. Epic.
giggity
I have to assume the band had no idea the last 2 years started with M and S, a coincidence. You mean they had no idea what letters the elaborately concieved productions they spent weeks planning started with? I bet they had a pretty good idea what they were doing. Just because we didn't see it until 5 weeks ago didn't mean they weren't setting us up for the long con years ago.

I think they realized recently, like most of us, that the last two New Years gags coincidentally started with M and S. Of course I could be wrong, but teasing with the Kung and randomly choosing Golf as the theme leads me to believe they were having fun with us in a decision that came in November or December.
