worst selection of songs?

I'm wondering if anyone has candidates for the worst single set of songs Phish ever put together in a show?
I don't mean the worst playing. I mean the worst selection of songs. Any stinker set choices?

June 06, 2009

Comcast Center, Mansfield, MA

Set 1: Stealing Time From the Faulty Plan, Nothing, Back on the Train, Golgi Apparatus, Sparkle > Gotta Jibboo, Lawn Boy, Let Me Lie[1], Taste, Makisupa Policeman[2], Prince Caspian

Set 2: Seven Below, Fluffhead, Scent of a Mule, Heavy Things, Harry Hood > Possum, Bug

Encore: Contact > Julius

[1] Phish debut.
[2] No "keyword."

Notes: Let Me Lie made its Phish debut at this show. The first post-break-up Makisupa Policeman notably did not contain a “keyword.”

Then Phish played most of the songs he'd bitched about in the lot. When they played Caspian he just raised his arms in surrender and played along. Fun times.

Merriweather Post Pavillion, Columbia, MD

Set 1: Crowd Control, Kill Devil Falls, The Sloth, Beauty of a Broken Heart, Axilla, Foam, Esther, Ha Ha Ha, Party Time[1], Tube, Stealing Time From the Faulty Plan, Strange Design, Time Turns Elastic

Set 2: Tweezer > Taste, Alaska, Let Me Lie, 46 Days, Oh! Sweet Nuthin' > Harry Hood

Encore: Good Times Bad Times, Tweezer Reprise

[1] Debut.

Notes: Before Ha Ha Ha, Trey chided Fish saying, “You should know this song, Fish, because you wrote this song.” After Ha Ha Ha, Trey said that he loved that song so much, that the time had come for the debut of Party Time, another Fish original that he loves even more. Before Tube, Trey said that he couldn’t hear what song a group of fans were shouting for, saying that it sounded like “Snoop.”  Trey then joked, “You said ‘Snoop’? He’s right back here, Snoop Dogg, everyone!” Finally, he started Tube, saying that he thought that was the song they were requesting. After Alaska, Trey offered some kind words for his guitar tech, Brian Brown, adding, “No Brian, no guitar.”

i don't particularly mind this song. i don't go to shows clamoring for it, by any means, but i thought it fit the creek show this summer alright. i also caught the debut at toyota park. it's a solid phish ballad, which is not their strongest field.

Hampton Coliseum, Hampton, VA

Set 1: Chalk Dust Torture, Bathtub Gin -> Runaway Jim, Walls of the Cave, Loving Cup

Set 2: All of These Dreams, Limb By Limb, Lifeboy, Crowd Control > Seven Below[1] > Stash -> NICU, Bug > Contact[2] > Character Zero

Encore: David Bowie

[1] Mary Had a Little Lamb tease.
[2] Little Drummer Boy jam.

Notes: All of These Dreams was preceded by a Fluffhead tease. After several glowsticks hit Trey’s rig at the end of Seven Below, Trey’s guitar tech, Brian Brown, had to come onstage to do some damage control, prompting Trey to say some words of thanks. Seven Below contained a Mary Had a Little Lamb tease from Trey. Contact culminated in a Little Drummer Boy jam.

Sparkle is a fun 3 minutes -- i can not possibly ruin a set.

Same with A ballad like Lawn Boy. Give me 2+ Ballads in a set and now you are wasting time, or just a one ballad encore is always disappointing. But again, one 3-5 min song cannot hurt a set, unless you let it, because you want to bitch.

And a ton of us love Lawn Boy and Page's swagger during it or Sparkle -- it was a song that made me grin ear-to-ear when I was 15, and I will never forget that.

I don't get hating on fun, upbeat 3-4 minute songs.

I understand TTE -- that is 17min wasted.

Or Caspian 7min(ok)-15min(ughh) that is very rarely interesting jamming.

2nd Set Jones Beach July 4th had Tweezer, Twist, Hood and Slave = 4 of my top 10 favorite songs.

It was still the worst live set, FOR MY TASTES, I have ever seen. Horse-> Silent, Shine a Light, Show of Life, and Sleeping Monkey weer 5 out of 7 songs at the end.

Not bad musically -- but 2nd set 4th of July, opening with Tweezer, is supposed rage not Sway to ballads 40 mins. of the last hour.

NigelTufnel That Mansfield '09 show will always be special, as it was my first...and I can relisten to the whole show and thoroughly enjoy it. However, if I had seen this show today I would've written a multi-page complaint on the review board, threatening to jump ship as the whole world goes to hell.

Ah, I shouldn't say that...I love Nothing and really enjoyed seeing all of the first set live (except Let Me Lie and Caspian...even in my juvenile days of phandom I knew these songs sucked), and that second set is actually a really strong set...even if it's really a solid first set in disguise.

TheArgus and if you wanna talk about an enigma, look at Mikes> Paug from charlotte this year. Contained a Tweezer> Hood, this is a thing that dreams are made of. However, Mikes went into Bouncing of all things and Hood went into Horse/Silent.

August 26, 2012

Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre - Charlotte, Charlotte, NC

Set 1: AC/DC Bag[1] > The Moma Dance > Heavy Things, Ocelot, Funky Bitch > Bathtub Gin > Fluffhead > Alumni Blues > Letter to Jimmy Page > Alumni Blues, Tube, My Sweet One, David Bowie

Set 2: Crosseyed and Painless > McGrupp and the Watchful Hosemasters > Mike's Song[2] > Bouncing Around the Room, Axilla > Tweezer[3] > Harry Hood > The Horse > Silent in the Morning > Weekapaug Groove, Suzy Greenberg[2]

Encore: Big Black Furry Creature from Mars > Tweezer Reprise

[1] Machine Gun teases from Trey and Fish.
[2] Crosseyed tease from Trey.
[3] Cars Trucks Buses tease from Mike.

Notes: Machine Gun (Jimi Hendrix) was teased by Trey and Fish before and during AC/DC Bag. During Alumni, Fish stated he didn't have a degree and later said he did. After Alumni, Trey said that Fish did have a degree, adding that they met in 1983 at UVM and that Fish held a very interesting record: the lowest grade point average ever recorded at UVM. Fish added "for a non-fraternity student" and both Trey and Fish joked about Fish's GPA (giving low numbers). Trey added that they were both saved by Page at Goddard and that Page earned $100 for recruiting them to Goddard. Trey introduced Tube and My Sweet One as Fishman songs, asking the crowd to count the number of times "you" appeared in the song. There was a delay in starting My Sweet One until Page said they had a lot of interesting stories (about Fishman), prompting Fishman to immediately start the song. Mike's and Suzy contained Crosseyed teases from Trey. Tweezer contained a Cars Trucks Buses tease from Mike. BBFCFM included Trey singing into his microphone that he raised above his head, playing his guitar behind his head and running around the stage and Mike playing his bass on his knees.

The show came immediately to mind for me because I actually like listening to it. The songs that people dislike are better than those people's opinions about them...objectively speaking, of course. ;) Very strong version of Hood anchors a decent 2nd set. First set is where I gather what others spill - unpopular favorites galore. If only they had gone deeper with that Caspian closer! There are plenty of shows with more impressive setlists that do a a lot less for me, e.g. the recent 12/29/12.
