Don't get the Sparkle, Sample, Lawn Boy hate

elfinito Permalink
With some threads in recent days, a lot of discussion of the "dreaded" songs -- Sparkle, Sample and Lawn Boy came up almost as much as any.

Sparkle is a fun 3 minutes -- it can not possibly ruin a set.

Sample is also short around 5min usually, and good energy, and a decent Rock tune, if nothing special. Again, cannot possibly ruin a set.

Lawn Boy -- again short, and actually really fun for a ballad, with Page's swagger. I really don't get this, unless its played horribly, or placed really bad.

Don't get me wrong - I am not there to see these songs. But they are so short, they are fillers...seeing Sparkle, does not mean it replaced some other epic song you now won't get.

Even if you don't love the song -- the crowd responds with great energy, and they are Really really short.

I understand hating songs like Caspian or TTE - Low energy songs that last a long time, and sap the energy from a set...and fill huge time slots (I also think SoL fits this)

harroldHOOD Permalink
harroldHOOD It's pretty simple. Those songs don't have jams. After hearing all these songs as set filler for years upon years people start to get tired of hearing them because they are played the same way every time. That is why placement becomes so crucial when it comes to these songs because for people who've already heard the same version of Sparkle 100+ times, even a placement might not do it for them.

patper Permalink
patper I like those three songs. But I also dislike a few other Phish songs. Can't win 'em all. There are a few songs from all of my favorite bands that I don't like.

I won't hate on it if they play them in the show, though. I don't care.

westbrook Permalink
westbrook I pretty much agree with @haroldHood in regards to the lack of improv in those songs being the main reason they are hated on. It's not that they're necessarily bad songs, but their predictability can be a downer for some.

By the way, the Sparkle opener at Portsmouth this year was really fun. I don't think many people had a problem with it as the opener.

50%+ of Phish songs are not jammed -- and these are 3min songs. They are short interludes.

I think this is an excuse -- these songs are hated cuz heads look at them as "noob" songs and beneath them. "You are not a real head if you like Sparkle or Sample."

To clarify --- I fully understand not craving or even not liking them -- I don't understand HATING them.

They just too sort and energetic to detract from a show, unless you let your own annoyance at them playing it bother you.

And they are very very rarely placed mid-2nd set.

I actually don't like Sample much at all. It's just short and enough energy though that I never feel it brings a set down -- so I just dance and with it....and wait for the next groove to kick in.

bostonron Permalink
bostonron I think there are many factors why some people hate on songs.

1) It's a cyclical process. When people first get introduced to Phish there are certain aspects of their music you gravitate towards. Some people fall in love with the jams. Others their humor. And some people love the short bouncy, fun tunes. Of course, many people love it all. But in being ao into a band for so many years, there will bo songs you hear so much there is a love/hate relationship with them. When I got into Phish, Bouncing was the big song people hated on (I guess that's still true to some extent). I have loved that song, hated it, loved it again so many times it's like a dysfunctional relationship. After 17 years, I've come to realize that there are just some songs I will never fully appreciate like I did when I was 18. It's just the way it goes. Will Bouncing, Sample or Sparkle ever ellict the same feelings they did when I was that aga again? Probably not. But I do enjoy them from time to time. And FWIW, Lawn Boy is awesome. Whoever "hates" Page coming from behind the grand piano and crooning a crowd of 20k people is doing the Phish all wrong

2) Another point, and probably the most controversial, is the Phish crowd is a clique. It's a clique like any other. We can sing this tune about how "different" the scene is all we want. And while that may be true to a certain degree, especially when compared to other "scenes", the fact is, people in this want to fit in. When there is a lot of hate geared towards certain songs or an attitude towards another sect of people (Biscuits) younger fans and people who can't think for themselves will jump on the hate bandwagon. It's human nature and it is very sad. The most diffilcult thing to this is that so many people will ignore that it exsits and pretend the scene is just full of utopian shiny happy people. When in reality, it is just a microcosm of the world at large around us and has just as many varying types of people as any other scene. People want to fit in. Esepcially younger kids. And it's easy to fall into those traps. Lesson here: think for yourself. If you like a song, like the f***ing song.

I was actually super thrilled to hear Bouncin, Sample, and Silent this run. I was also hoping for a Golgi too, which is interesting because that's a song I got sick of a while ago. I guess I got over it.

I have no problem with the different dislikes and favorites --- and just don't get the HATE some songs get. Especially short crowd-pleasers like Sparkle, Bouncing, Sample, Lawn Boy, Golgi, etc....

Of course I "look forward" to the bliss of a new launching point. I don't care what song it comes out of. I don't like Light as song per se -- but goddamn do I get excited when I here its opening notes now....

what? people hate scent of a mule? That's usually a ripper! I was actually disappointed that they didn't play it NYE this year (was played NYE last 2 yrs and both 2012 versions were pretty unique imo)

There were nearly 1,500 unique posters in the last month. Of course almost every song in the catalog will be disliked by at least one person. To me, it's completely normal and reasonable to love a band but have a short list of songs you'd rather not hear, especially when that band is as diverse and prolific as Phish. Not seeing the humor in that...

How one could hate Tela is beyond me as phish fan. Buy anyway sample, while I'm not saying it is my favorite song or anything. It is a definitive phish song, its oozes phish imo. It is one of they're only songs that can be placed well anywhere in a set. Opener or closer of any set, mid set, encore doesn't matter it almost always works well. I can see getting tied of hearing it but its a phish staple.

I guess it just sort of oozes the parts of Phish I don't care for. REALLY hate the lyrics and how they are sung. If I'm trying to turn someone on to Phish and the show I'm playing has Tela, I get embarrassed. Just don't think it sounds even remotely "cool". I think the greater point here is that taste is subjective. We all love Phish(why else would we be on .net) but we love them for different reasons and different aspects of there sound. Like I said in my post, I like the three songs the OP mentions even though others don't. We all have different taste. Rarity or not, if I got a Tela at a show, I would not be pumped.

Sample is a great tune, perfect for a first set.

Lawn Boy is alright, I don't go to a show hoping to hear it and on occasion I do enjoy it. However I think it is overplayed. Perhaps Lawn Boy and Sparkle should switch places.
