Favorite Stanley Kubrick?

IntoYesterday Permalink
So many to choose from. Most recently Eyes Wide Shut, Clockwork Orange, 2001, The Shining. But I think my favorite work he did was the fake moon landing.

mjrphishhead I gotta go with 2001 although it is a tough choice to make. Everything about this movie is PERFECT. Maybe my favorite movie ever. Clockwork Orange and Full Metal Jacket are right up there too.

bostonron LOVE Kubrick. Easily my favorite director.

So many great films, Clockwork is among my favorite films of all time. The moral message, violence and society is poignant, blantant in your face. The cinematography is some of the best I've ever seen. Such a great great film.

spaced I can't say I have a clear favorite, but this blog made me appreciate The Shining even more than I used to. Some of it is just speculation and coincidence, and the dude's wordy as hell so I did a lot of skimming, but there's a surprising amount of stuff that makes perfect sense. The imagery that Kubrick changed from the book, the timecode information, etc. Worth a look.

The book was a great read after watching the movie first. Sort of like a director's cut, with fresh mental images of the characters already provided by Malcom McDowell & Co.

Oh, I'd have the blu-rays if I could afford them. Or if my ODD could burn them lol. Luckily, I still am allowed to stay at my parents home when I please and watching a standard definition movie is somewhere between moderately and extremely stupendous on a 60 inch flatscreen :)

not that it matters, 2001 was spectacular played through my 21 inch tube TV (wait, those still exist?!?!?!?!?) played through a PS2 in my apartment last weekend :)

It's a real pleasure knowing that this season of Michigan football will be known for a) our incumbent quarterback, who both defeated Ohio State and won a bowl game in the previous season, ended up losing his job and playing a flex position in the postseason, and b) Jadeveon Clowney decleating one of our players in a .gif that made the Internet rounds faster than Penny Lane among the members of Stillwater.

NigelTufnel I refuse to watch A Clockwork Orange, because I just love the edge the book has and loved decoding the diction as much as the actual story, and was proud when I got the hang of it. It makes you a better reader/thinker...and I really don't want to mess with that special thang we got goin' on by watching the flick...

It may be legendary, but I am extremely apprehensive to check it out.

I enjoyed that part of reading the book as well. I basically read about halfway through to get the hang of it, then went back and started again. Nice mental exercise.

chris200w @NigelTufnel - I read A Clockwork Orange in high school and adored it. I saw the film for the first time a few years later and was honestly not impressed. If I had never read the book, I may have had a different experience with the film, but as it stands, it's by far my least favorite of the post-Strangelove Kubrick films.

That film is a masterpiece. I think it is a better indictment of war than Full Metal Jacket. Although, FMJ is stunning. When that was new it was really wild.

Friends of mine and I rode our bikes for nearly an hour to get to the mall to see Full Metal when it came out. We were huge Kubrick fans and absolutely had to see it as soon as possible. Even the poster's tag line was pretty out there, "In Vietnam the wind doesn't blow it sucks".

It must've been a weekday we had off from school otherwise we could've gotten a ride from one of our parents, lol.....
Score: 0

Jerrytheband Permalink
Jerrytheband I love how much work Kubrick would put into preproduction of a film. Sometimes it would take him years, one great example is when he was going to make a film about Napoleon, which was cancelled by the film company. He said that he had read over 500 books on Napoleon in order to get the film right.
