I am pretty sure this is a discussion about everyones personal opinion on the jams of the run.@ProfPhan you are out of your mind... but to each his own.I think most would agree that Carini is not even in the conversation for Best of 3.0, especially weighed against things like Light 9/1/12, DWD 6/3/11 and BDTNL 8/16/09.
I say Carini was/is one of the best jams of 3.0 and clearly the best of the run.
Those songs have musical narratives that ebb and flow and build and reach a crescendo. Carini was good but not that good.
Wolfman's was one of the "freshest" 3.0 jams I have heard in a while. It was one of the few jams from this era where it didn't feel like they had played anything like that before, IMO. It was like funk for the new millennium.
I think the Carini has a narrative for sure, but it's a twisted one. This is a style that Phish 3.0 rarely (if ever) explored up until this point. There is a narrative, but since it is quite a dense and harmonically evil jam it is harder to approach. Phish completely threw away the net in that set, and for that I give them props because they rarely ever do that these days. They may have reinvigorated spirit about jamming, but that DWD> 20 Years> Carini sequence is them being very risky and pushing the envelope a little more than have up until this point. I don't know about you, but that's one of the main reasons I fell in love with this band in the first place. That being said, people have different opinions and that doesn't make someone love a set. Personally, I've been waiting for them to do something like that for a long time and IMHO they delivered ten-fold.
The Piper is fairly straight forward, but for some reason is completely mind bending.
I am suprised nobody has mentioned the MFMF-> Antelope. Because that Antelope was FIRE. At least as far as 3.0 versions go. The only Antelope I can find to truly compare I would say is the SPAC '10 version.
The Carini is overrated, but the Tweezer and Wolfman's are great. Close tie with Dick's '11 for my favorite Wolfman's, and I think the Tweezer is tied for second of 3.0 with Dick's '11. I think last years MSG Tweezer was better. I also think last years MSG Carini was better. Call me crazy but give 'em a listen.
I truly believe this is the best antelope of 3.0 though, give it a listen again. Precise and direct soloing from Trey right from the first minute of the jam and it picks up, and up, and up, and just continues to deliver from to the last note. I would say the best jams of the run are as follows:
DWD
Antelope
Piper
I know both the MSG Carini and Tweezer from last year. I was also at both shows and I have to say personally that both versions from this year crush last years' versions. It's not even a contest in my mind, but hey to each his own. I might agree that the Disease is better than the Carini this year. The Disease jam needs to get more love.
Honestly I'm just glad there are an abundance of great jams to debate about.
Honestly I'm just glad there are an abundance of great jams to debate about.^This! After NYE 2011 I felt like all I was thinking about were the great jams that could have been...lets take a moment to be greatful that we can have these discussions and that 2012 produced so many amazing jams!
I think the DWD absolute kills the Carini. If that Disease kept going where it was the last 1:30-2:00 with Trey soloing I felt like he could have summoned a demon. He only went a couple bars soloing on the theme. And it was cool but that's also what makes it unique. We have that small amount of peak at the end. Could have been more IMO.Have you listened to the 7/3/12 Antelope from Jones Beach? To me it blows away the 12/30/12, which is still a great version.

Ok, I went back and re-listened. It's TWEEZER. Holy smokes... so beautiful it's beyond even music, just pure ambrosia.
