My first set was 78 minutes of absolute bliss. The vibe going into the show was amazing. I was tripping my balls off on some amazing shrooms and was so excited about finally seeing this band that i've been listening to consistently for the past 10 months. Sitting on the lawn passing around a j with my friends while pulling up grass and letting it fall through my fingers (which felt amazing) is a memory that will stay with me forever. This is my very lengthy review of my 1st show in case you're interested in all the details.

Anyway... I was up on that crappy lawn. I only knew a couple songs (poor heart, disease). My friends I went with dispersed and I ended up hanging with a friend I didn't know that well at the time, but am now tight with. It was early/first season of hanging with the Herb. I don't think I told my parents where I was or what I was doing. So, there was a lot of environmental stuff going on. But, I do have a memory of the enveloping of the sound and lights (that happens still at, like, every show and I love it). The sensory experience of the lights and fog machine and the music growing, being isolated at a distant point and, like, growing toward me, enveloping me. The out of this world feeling. Does that make sense. it's awesome.

The whole time I was just smiling and jumping and thinking it was the best show ever. Honestly, now that I've gone back and listened, it was a pretty sloppy/mediocre show (besides the Tweezer, pretty sure I got IT during that). I really don't listen to the show much anymore except for the Tweezer, which I will remember for a long time.

I remember though thinking that everybody was really nice. Before the show some guy came up to me out of nowhere and started telling me how he met Page and got a signed copy of Hampton Comes Alive...that was pretty funny. Also I sat behind a wook who had like 8 beers in the first set alone and a couple more at set break and passed out during the second set and then woke up for the encore. I don't think that left a great impression with my dad...I don't think I'll be driving myself to phish anytime in 2013.

Set 1: Llama, The Moma Dance, Guyute, Anything But Me, Cars Trucks Buses, Chalk Dust Torture, Golgi Apparatus, David Bowie, Cavern > Possum, Ocelot, Run Like an Antelope

Set 2: Backwards Down the Number Line -> Twenty Years Later, Halley's Comet > Rock and Roll, Harpua -> I Kissed a Girl[1] > Hold Your Head Up > Harpua, You Enjoy Myself

Encore: Grind, I Been Around[2], Highway to Hell

[1] Phish debut.
[2] Debut.

Notes: The Harpua narration centered on a depressed Jimmy calling on his Spirit Guide who happened to be a “funny little man wearing a dress” who spoke truth through song (in this case, I Kissed a Girl). This show featured the Phish debut of I Kissed a Girl (described by Trey as “so wrong on so many levels”).  After Harpua, Trey remarked to Fish that he was waiting for the day when Fish went to see Katy Perry and she performed a Phish song, prompting Fish to declare, “I don’t apologize to Katy Perry for that. I only apologize to [the audience].” Prior to the encore, Trey stated that it was hard to play the last show of the tour because they felt like they could just keep going.  Before starting the debut performance of I Been Around, Trey explained that they were playing it because he realized that it was the one song off of the upcoming album (Joy) that they hadn’t played live.
