sloppy phish

frump Permalink
frump hey guys,

hard to say why exactly, but lately I've been diggin the really sloppy and dark stuff:. coventry (sorry if this is a sore subject), las vegas 04, 7/5/98.

the contrast of the brightness of phish figuratively (and lyrically) and the thrash that results from high emotions, being f***'d up and/or despondent, is incredibly interesting.

any recommendations are welcome, hit me with the sloppiest.

my condolences go out the the family of @barefootbob. I never knew him, but he sure does sound like a great man.

Set 2: A Song I Heard the Ocean Sing > Piper[3] -> Gotta Jibboo[4] > Limb By Limb, Cavern[5]

Encore: Wading in the Velvet Sea

[1] No whistling.
[2] No intro.
[3] Tweezer Reprise jam.
[4] Unfinished
[5] Purple Haze tease; Trey forgot an entire verse.

Notes: Reba did not have the whistling ending. Scents did not have the intro. Piper featured a substantial Tweezer Reprise jam. Jibboo was unfinished. Trey forgot an entire verse of Cavern. Cavern contained a Purple Haze tease.

FunkyCFunkyDo This is a good show, actually. Halley's -> Tweezer is very good. Piper -> Frankenstein is also very good. Amazing Pebbles and Marbles. Really cool YEMeastickprise mashup. Plus the only Wolfman's encore - ever. And a really, really rockin Ghost!

Thomas & Mack Center, Las Vegas, NV

Set 1: Soul Shakedown Party, Halley's Comet -> Tweezer, Ginseng Sullivan > Horn > Sample in a Jar, Piper -> Frankenstein > David Bowie

Set 2: Meatstick[1], Pebbles and Marbles > Prince Caspian[2] -> Simple > Friday, Ghost[3], You Enjoy Myself[4] -> Tweezer Reprise[5]

Encore: Wolfman's Brother[6], The Squirming Coil

[1] Japanese lyrics.
[2] Unfinished.
[3] Down with Disease tease.
[4] Lengthy Meatstick session immediately following the trampolines segment. No vocal jam.
[5] Trey rapped "time for the Meatstick" over intro. Normal lyrics replaced with "won't you step into the Meatstick?"
[6] Sneakin' Sally, Possum, Simple, and Meatstick teases.

Notes: Fenton Williams sat in for Chris Kuroda on lights. The band played Meatstick seemingly at the instigation of a crowd chant of the lyrics that began behind the stage. Meatstick subsequently included Japanese lyrics. Caspian was unfinished. Ghost had a Down with Disease tease. YEM included a lengthy Meatstick session immediately following the trampolines segment. As Fishman took a drum solo, Trey set his guitar down to perform the Meatstick Dance while the crowd chanted the lyrics. The band jammed back into YEM, but then left Page to solo while again Trey danced and the crowd sang. This cycle repeated with Mike soloing on bass. YEM lacked its standard vocal jam. Trey rapped: “time for the Meatstick” over the intro to Tweezer Reprise, which also had its normal lyrics replaced with “won’t you step into the Meatstick?” Wolfman’s contained teases of Sneakin’ Sally, Possum, Simple, and Meatstick.

Set 2: All of These Dreams, Limb By Limb, Lifeboy, Crowd Control > Seven Below[1] > Stash -> NICU, Bug > Contact[2] > Character Zero

Encore: David Bowie

[1] Mary Had a Little Lamb tease.
[2] Little Drummer Boy jam.

Notes: All of These Dreams was preceded by a Fluffhead tease. After several glowsticks hit Trey’s rig at the end of Seven Below, Trey’s guitar tech, Brian Brown, had to come onstage to do some damage control, prompting Trey to say some words of thanks. Seven Below contained a Mary Had a Little Lamb tease from Trey. Contact culminated in a Little Drummer Boy jam.

Mike’s Song featured minor lyric changes, three different Tweezer teases, two different Wilson teases, and other teases of Reba, Lizards, and Stash. During Hydrogen before the Vibration of Life, Mike teased Entrance of the Gladiators. After Kung, Mike quoted NO2. The Rock and Roll All Nite jam was for fan Jay von Lehe, dressed as Kiss’ Gene Simmons, who the band brought on stage to sing the song’s chorus. Terrapin featured band intros and lots of chatter from Fish, prompting a hurry-up HYHU tease from Page. Fish also performed a lengthy vacuum solo during this tune. The HYHU outro segued into Hood as Fish and Trey switched places. Neither Have Mercy (first since Halloween, 1986, or 668 shows) nor MMGAMOIO were played in their entirety. Walk Away was played for the first time since November 2, 1991 (159 shows). This show was released as part of the Phish At The Roxy box set.

bl002e Good-yet-sloppy Phish immediately brings summer '99 to mind. I don't think there's another tour out there that I've 180-ed on nearly as much as that one. At the seven shows I saw, I constantly varied between worrying about how much sloppier they sounded on composed sections than in any previous Phish era, but at the same time, their newfound ethereal jamming style in gems like the 7/10/99 Chalk Dust blew my mind.

Over the next five years, as they got sloppier and sloppier, and as the personal issues mounted within the band, my opinion of that '99-00 era soured. Because downloading shows and burning them to CD was replacing the XLIIs, B&P trading model, and because the new process took a long time, the shows I'd listen to were mostly from the golden age of '91-98 and the LivePhish.com soundboards of 2.0. Why would I waste my time with inferior AUDs of two inferior Phish years?

Once they came back four years ago, the excitement of all things Phish came back into my life (and really hasn't left), as well as a little resource called THE SPREADSHEET. Because we now live in an era of quick downloading and cheap data storage, back around the first year or two of the 3.0 era, I decided to add every show I've seen to an iTunes playlist, and listen to those shows in order. When I reached '99, I was blown away. Yes, there's a decent amount of slop contained within, but not nearly to the show-ruining extent I remembered. But I could not get over how many jams approached the level of the Camden Chalk Dust: the druggy delight of the MPP Free> WTU? and the Camden Tweezer, the utter epicness of the Oswego DWD, Jim, and Piper and the Toronto Ghost and Misty Mountain Hop (my choice when I guest hosted the last Mystery Jam Monday of 2012 -- don't overlook this one!), the sublimity of the Star Lake Simple> MLT (after pimping the shit out of the MLT for the last two years and then seeing it on "So Inclined" in a starring role, I kind of feel like a proud father), and the magic that is Polaris set two (Ghost! Birds!).

Sadly, while there were brief moments of inspiration contained within, the Nassau/Albany run and Rochester show I caught later that year were as mediocre as I remembered them being, which skewed my opinion of both legs of the '99 fall tour. But other shows and jams within those two tours have equally surprised me, to the point where I now consider 1999 to be a fine, fine year of Phish, slop and all.

Well, this turned out to be longer than I originally intended. Here's the TL;DR: check out these highlights of the shows I caught in the summer of the greatest "Sloppy Phish" year of 1999:

- 7/9/99 MPP: Free > What's The Use?
- 7/10/99 Camden: Chalk Dust Torture, Tweezer
- 7/17/99 Oswego: Down With Disease
- 7/18/99 Oswego: Runaway Jim, Piper
- 7/20/99 Toronto: Ghost, Misty Mountain Hop
- 7/21/99 Star Lake: Simple -> My Left Toe
- 7/23/99 Polaris: Ghost -> Free > Birds Of A Feather

Other summer '99 highlights not to be missed:

- 7/4/99 Atlanta: Ghost -> Slave To The Traffic Light
- 7/8/99 VA Beach: Fee
- 7/13/99 Great Woods: Halley's Comet -> Roses Are Free -> NO2
- 7/15/99 PNC: Split Open And Melt -> Kung -> Jam
- 7/24/99 Alpine: Fluffhead
- 7/25/99 Deer Creek: My Friend, My Friend -> My Left Toe -> Whipping Post, Birds Of A Feather
Score: 7

MDosque Great post on the summer of 99 - I love that Camden Tweezer and I certainly would not call that show sloppy but I love the reflections on those two years. I completely agree and relate. I did the same thing when 3.0 started back up again and revisited the shows I saw right before the first hiatus. If you want sloppy from that era, check out the Camden shows from the next year 7/3/00 and 7/4/00. I can attest that the scene was WAY out of control and sloppy is what you will find here. I recall not loving these shows at the time, but listening back, I am struck by the energy coming through the recording. Particularly the DWD opener on the 3rd. That sucker peaks several times and the crowd is in a frenzy. Great stuff there. And I think I actually hated the Jim at the time, but when you hear it now, it's really creative and intense.

Interesting posts - I respect your desire for the struggles. Sometimes you find gems in there.

I haven't heard this one, but the Notes made me LOL.

2000 is when I REALLY started to get into Phish with a passion. At the time, I didn't quite realize that their playing was comparatively sloppy. Well, I do remember wishing that they would play with the ferocity that they had in '94, and never having my wish fulfilled.
I tend not to like sloppy Phish... but next time I encounter it, I'll try to approach it with the perspective that was described in this thread. I might hear it differently.
