Sorry, that was completely out of line @bostonron. I had surgery on my knee this morning and been eating percocets all day. I apologize OP.

OP stop being a whiney bitch and accept the Reba for what it was. You'll get your quiet Reba at another show. Sorry you hate glowsticks and people who cheer.
And for the record, I was a few sections over from the glowstick blast, and the cheering definitely started in that section and spread across the venue.
It was such an awesome moment, I have no clue why anyone is complaining

A small section cheered for a toss of some very bright glow sticks that then spread throughout MSG. I feel confident saying 90% of the people in the loud cheer everyone is debating here had no idea a bunch of glow sticks had been thrown. For whatever reason, a collective energy pulsated through the crowd and the crowd roared that energy back to the band.
Reba is my favorite Phish song and while this Reba was building as one of the slower and more patient Reba's I've heard in awhile, the crowd eruption was awesome. It really was a "you had to be there" moment. As others have said, the crowd was letting the band know how awesome they are and how happy everyone was to be there in that moment. Really special to me, and did not ruin Reba in any way for me.
At that point, I was in the upper-level with a real good view of the entire arena. I didn't notice an unusual amount of glowsticks. I did notice a huge, rippling cheer throughout the crowd in sections with and without glowsticks.
The video from @projmersch does show a bunch of glowsticks being tossed and that resulted in some cheering, but that was a pretty small bunch of glowsticks. You probably wouldn't have noticed much if you were in another section, and those weren't the first glowsticks of the night. At the time, I didn't notice it at all.
I think a lot of the cheering was just in response to other cheering, not "You scream, I scream, we all scream for glowsticks."
I am pro-spontaneous cheer in 12/29 Reba.

They didn't ruin the show for me, or anyone else I've talked to that was there, if anything it did the opposite. Sorry Couch Tour folks, go to the show if you want the full experience, don't bitch and moan that THE CROWD who paid for their tickets and traveled to the venue are interrupting your webcast, tough shit, you are watching a sold out show for a fraction of the price, be happy with what you have. The person who started this thread (and thus, the debate) was AT MSG. And so was @grooveholmes, who agrees with OP. This isn't a live v. couch tour argument.
I think it's safe to say that I f***ing LOVE Reba. And while I have heard every version that circulates, I have only heard 4 live, so I was beyond ecstatic to be in the room for that one. And the quiet part is one of my favorite things, really essential for what I consider to be the perfect Reba.
There was fantastic quiet playing at the start of that Reba jam. At the time, I was in heaven. I think the crowd eruption probably had something to do with glowsticks, but I really do believe, as others have stated, that it was primarily about a spontaneous release of joy over how beautiful that song is. It's probably because I was there live, but even on tape, that cheer gives me chills and brings a smile to my face, just like it did that night.
They bailed on the ending, absolutely, and as a Reba fan, that's frustrating. But Reba has been having issues like that for a while now, and I really don't think it was rip-corded because of the cheering. It could have been, I don't know for sure, but with so many noodle-filled or rip-corded or otherwise disappointing 3.0 versions, it's hard for me to blame this one on the crowd. Besides, it's pretty hard to get a room the size of MSG to be quiet for a delicate jam.
It's still just a slightly above average Reba, IMHO, brought down by some slop in the composed section and, most importantly, the almost total lack of a peak. But there's some really pretty work in the first part of the jam, and if you close your eyes and let yourself get washed away in it, I think you might be able to appreciate that a lot of people (probably not all, but a lot) were cheering out of sheer joy and not for glowsticks.
Just my opinion, though.
Glad you got another one dude. Sorry (for you and all of us) that it wasn't top notch. I dream of a day when we'll hear a Reba that compares to 10/31/94 or 5/16/95 or Alpine 97 etc. Though I'm thankful we're getting what we are.

I was hoping our resident Reba guru would chime in.

my vote goes for glowstick eruption. in section 224, right smack in the middle of the venue page side, you could witness the glow sticks being thrown. with this in mind i feel that the roar began seconds after they began to rain down from the back of the venue, and i also feel it had a definite influence on the direction of the song. also it should be noted as the great James Brown once said "what it is is what is"
I don't care what anybody says......that was a special moment during reba when everyone was going nuts. And don't try n tell me they (phish) didn't love every second of it.
Unbelievable that I see comments trashing the crowd erupting during "Reba" - It was one of the best moments I witnessed in person at MSG during this run. You idiots should stop going to shows if the crowd cheering bothers you that much!
If I'm 16 then your 16, brah, same shows'd. Can you still have fun? Everyone wants their intimate phish moment but it was NYE run people are pumped up man.
