Really I came here to say this is the only other band that truly gets me off like Phish does. I think when that unfortunate day comes when our boys are finally done, Umphrey's is going to take their spot, rightfully so.
What do you guys think?
Edit - Maybe I shouldn't be comparing them to Phish. They are a really good band.
Sadly, the new poppy tracks are what's making it into their setlists as of late. I've been to over 30 UM shows since 2007, and I don't really have a desire to see them ever again.
I was at all four nights of the new years run too dude. They killed it. I've seen them about 25 times and they melt my face every time. If someday phish did unfortunately have to call it quits I think umphreys would be the rightful heir.

I like Anchor Drops. That is all I am really familiar with.
One of the funniest things I've ever seen. I wonder how his night went.I can't imagine coming down in a cell. Hopefully they were kind to him.

Is the video gone? I'd love to laugh at that again. And I better see you in Providence
I have said it before and I am saying it again... Umphrey's is in their prime right now. GO SEE THEM!Thats what I'm picking up on after the New Years run. Like there's no way this can't be their prime with the fire they bring every show. I can't wait to see them again, hopefully in Charlotte next month

They definitely play with lots of energy and are talented, but I don't care for their style of improv as much as Phish's. Phish jams feel more organic and free-flowing to me, where UM jams feel more structured and defined.Definitely true, but Umphrey's goes into Type II at least 3 or 4 times every set, and for much of the show they are pretty much winging it. The two have completely different styles of improv but I love both.

UM can and will sell out arenas in the near future. They have families now and are entering their late 30's, no? If arenas are coming it better be soon. Phish is a prime example of what happens when families meet your 40's... less touring, more family time.

True, maybe it's just a dream I have ha.
I was also not super familiar with their music but decided to go on the 31st because I couldn't make it up to NY. Let me tell you, they are veryy very good live. They killed it when i saw them at Bonnaroo this year and the nye run. I plan on seeing them in Charlotte and Raliegh in a few weeks and i'm stoked.
This is a shot of the whole park the lake is quite cool you can go hang out at it if you don't get caught go swimming while jamming out. This place is awesome and only holds 7,000
I didn't know what to expect from UM as I never gave them a chance but they were pretty good
Check out the setlist from that awesome night and BTW if anyone of you kind folks knows where I can find a copy please please let me know...

@blackeydsloth Looks like a sweet venue but doesn't seem like they book too many shows I just checked their websiteI haven't been there since was my first and only time at venue and it was in August. They probably have more shows in summer do to warmer weather. I'd say April/May-Sept/Oct possibly![]()
Check out the setlist from that awesome night and BTW if anyone of you kind folks knows where I can find a copy please please let me know...no hits on the hub at the moment

edit: maybe its cuz I don't know their stuff as much, but they bust out some epic covers. fun band. see them.
I just listened to the 28th & 29th, jeezus. That Hangover (12/29 - set 1) where they tease (hell, play) Who Knows? is just the ( . Y . )Hell yeah they rip the shit out of that song too. You should check out the 30th when you get a chance. Second set: Bright Lights-> Cocaine-> Bright Lights is such a smooth sandwich of the two songs. They got some versatility when it comes to covers. I mean shit going from Hendrix, Clapton, Zeppelin, to f***ing Bob Seger! Check out the Hollywood Nights bust out from the 28th if you haven't heard that one, just makes me feel good mannnn!
I know i will get shot down and -1'd for this, and let me say I'm a huge Phish fan dating back to the mid-90's, but UM is playing better than Phish right now. Much better! IMO the jamming is more creative, the segues are much more cohesive, they are just playing better with a much better energy.
Again, this is just one man's opinion and isn't meant as a knock on Phish but as someone else pointed out, Umphrey's is really on fire right now.
That was the big debate in 2004(and 2000 to a much lesser degree). Turns out no one could fill Phish's spot. Musical tastes change with time and I don't think anyone will take their place for a long time. 1999/2000 was the hay day for the jam scene and Phish was the king of the world then. Young kids these days just aren't as into it as these days. The scene isn't being infused with young blood. Back then everyone had a sister, brother or cousin into Phish that would introduce the youngings to the community. The breakup killed that.
Really I came here to say this is the only other band that truly gets me off like Phish does. I think when that unfortunate day comes when our boys are finally done, Umphrey's is going to take their spot, rightfully so.

With that said...I love Umph. I've only seen them a few times since 2004 or 2005, but every time is a blast. As someone else said, I like their earlier sound a little as it was much more groove oriented. I feel like changing drummers was the cause of this, Myers is much more of a "rock/metal" band drummer. The new sound is growing on me as I thoroughly enjoyed a show this summer(after 4 or 5 years without a show).
It doesn't really make sense to compare them to Phish though, while they do play to similar crowds and put similar thought into making their shows special and weird; the styles are way different. And their one weakness is that - and this may have changed since I last saw them - is that they don't all have their own mudical personalities, they seem to hang on Jake and Brendan.
Yes, phish has lived off of Trey's creativity for years, but not always. The rest of the band members have all championed countless jams, just look at how Fish carried the MSG Carini. I may change my tune on this after next weekend. But this was apparent at the other shows I've seen.
With that said, Ive loved the shows I've seen, Jake is a wizard on the guitar and they are tight and creative.
See you there.
-Dave
I've seen them 69 times since 2005 and it's great to be a fan from Mass, because all the shows are so close. Definitely my favorite band playing right now (sorry Phish.)
@myMomaDontDance said: [quote] As someone else said, I like their earlier sound a little as it was much more groove oriented.Sheeeet check out the New Years shows bra! I heard some THICK funky grooves on the 28th and 29th. But I do agree about the change on drummers. Although I can't say I don't like the change, I think his style matches well with the rest of the bands style. I mean they can bring some heavy shit to the table.

Seen em a number of times. Love them! Stasik kills on bass! can't wait to see em again at wakarusa later this year.
I also went to Mayan holidaze in Tulum a few weeks ago. That was an incredible event!

The 30th was the only night I caught, and at times it was really, really good; especially the second set. I feel like a lot of times, though, they are right there about to take me to another plane, and then the pull out right when it's getting good. They definitely have the chops, and there are bits of brilliance in every show I've seen, but they ripcord more than trey.
There is a reason I (and many I met there on the 30th) went to panic for NYE. And before you bash me for a spreadhead, I would have been a MSG if I could afford it.
I'm psyched for providence, Fete is a tiny venue, I'm pretty surprised that they're playing there. I saw the fire code cert when I saw AOD there a few weeks ago it said 580! That's tiny, and the place has fantastic sound. I've seen UM three times I think, but I haven't seen them in prob 5 years, so I'm really pumped for this show. It doesn't really make sense to compare them to Phish though, while they do play to similar crowds and put similar thought into making their shows special and weird; the styles are way different. That place is real small, I am a complete noob to UM, I have heard a few shows but this Providence show will be my first time seeing them live. Not many chances to see some good live music in Providence anymore, at least not like there used to be, so why not check them out.
I wonder if the will do any phish covers? hahahahahaha just kiding
I'm in the same boat on that one. Honestly though instead of going to Charlotte for Panic I really wish I would have just stayed in Atlanta for the nexy two nights.
