Too composed and inorganic IMO. I can't get into it....it is almost, to perfect. no flubs or taking chances at all which causes there to never be those epic special moments. just fun and good shows.

They take a lot of chances. Their jamming style is very different and very unique. They signal changes using body language and hand gestures. They go type II all the time but where most bands will have one theme working during a jam or wander from theme to theme, UM will have three or four themes going and use signals to bounce between them. It does sound composed at times which IMO makes it all the more special. It is really amazing what they do.
I do understand it isn't for everybody, but don't sell yourself short and brush these guys off. They are one of the best live acts to grace the stage.

Awesome band with endless creativity and fresh jams. No need to compare them to the Phish, because they aren't going for the same type of thing musically. Just like with Phish and the Dead, I love to love both for similar and different reasons. They're extremely focused and I haven't heard a bad note in all my hours of listening/seeing them live.
Of course I can't wait for 2013 Phish but I'm also really pumped to be hitting the UM shows in Winston-Salem (1/23), Charlotte (1/24) and Raleigh (1/25), all a relatively short drive from my school.

I'm seeing them this Saturday in Providence. I forget the venue, but tixs are $25 and it's a super small ballroom. 300 or so capcity. I'm pretty excited.
Hoping to get Lotus in on the 25th (my bday) and Trey the 26th in Albany. Could be a fun week stretch of music if all goes well.

Can't say I'm a fan. The music they're releasing these days is much too poppy & simplistic for my likingIf you're still looking at this thread I want to hear your follow up on that. I am a big um fan and mostly disagree with that statement, so I am just curious about what you think is poppy and simplistic (I am especially curious about simplistic). Given that you are an experienced um-goer I am intrigued

UM took me by surprise at the Milwaukee shows at the end of October. I'll be seeing them 2-4 times next month and am really excited for this band's future. The jamming is unreal... Glad there is something for when Phish kicks the bucket.
So will the Providence show sell out? Would it be wise to purchase tickets beforehand and pay the stupid service fees? The show in Boston over the summer was pretty sparse(although it was a much bigger outdoor venue).I believe it is sold out, not 100% sure though. Like others have said, the venue is really small.

If anyone has any extras I would happily take them off your hands.
I want to know if any of y'all are going this Friday to the Beacon. We can have a drink and make fun of UM together.

Very stoked for next week! I'm tryna hit Winston and Charlotte.

Also, lots of people praising this year's UM NYE run, but I haven't listened yet. 10/28/11 Tabernacle will be in heavy rotation until Friday.

Funny, I'm seeing Trey the 25th, and Lotus the 26th.I'm strongly considering Lotus on the 26th, too. The sound in Best Buy Theater is MASSIVE. Enough bass to shake a few fillings loose. Wish MGB would play there some day - maybe too big a venue for him?

I'm pumped I bought a 2 day pass so I'll be seeing them in BK at a 200 person venue compared to a 2100 person Best Buy Theater. And both nights cost me 41 bucks total.

And also yeah it's probably too big for Gordo, but I'd like to see him at the BK bowl. I'm pretty sure he's played there before. I love that venue.

Saw Gordo at BK Bowl in 2011, and have been craving another show since. Almost booked a flight to EU this year, but realized my limitations & canned the idea. **PLM 2013**
Yeah total thread jack here haha, I'm ready for Friday though. It's billed as their anniversary show celebrating 15 years of facemelting. And on twitter the other day they referred the show as a "rage-a-thon." And it's now sold out.
Will be there friday, bringing some noobs (my son and a friend) 1pair of tix lodge front row left, 1 pair lower balc front row center. Set

Absolutely love Umphrey's! This show has been posted a ton but is worth it if you don't have it. Seems a lot of us had the same introduction to Umphrey's:Cool, I'd never heard that 1998 show before. Thanks for the link.
