It'll be my first time. Travelling all the way out there with my girlfriend to visit some family, then party our butts off in "Nawlins"Anyone here going, or have been?

Words cant describe...downtown is a bit too nuts for me i prefer uptown for the parades. Go see galactic on lundi gras...all night show at tipitinas til one of the biggest parades at 8am. Yeah pm me if you need any advice...oh and get your hotel asap. But its the biggest party ive ever seen

I've gone twice and it is a great time. Make sure to check out Pat O'Briens Piano Bar, it's one of the oldest in the country and they can play pretty much anything.
There's a band named EarPhunk outta there, they're touring but are coming back to do a show/s during Mardi Gras. It was interesting driving through the 9th ward and seeing the damage from Katrina. I haven't been out there in 3 years or so, so I'm not too sure how it looks now. My buddy who's from there always says to stay away from Esplanade Ave. and that it's where Lil Wayne is from.
Oh and women really will do anything for beads.

i live here.. def do galacitc lundi gras, and earphunk.. stay away from bourbon street unless you go to lafittes for purple drank.. make sure to stay on frenchmen st.. lots of music and awesomeness up and down that street..

I haven't been in 14 years, but it was fckn crazy when I was there. We (me and 2 other girls) slept in our car (very bad idea), had all of our clothes stolen, got dropped off in florida for a party that was over when we got there and had to find our way back...(walk,bus,hitch,walk,brown bag o wine,hitch) went searching for mushrooms in a cow field (in February), took part in a mid street bon fire 2 blocks over from decatur with giant puppets and crazy drum people called Wandering Womb, met Mamma Digdown Brass Band...they played in Milwaukee quite a bit, the girl i was with was trading her dress to a stranger while I was wearing it (we shared cuz our shit was stolen), 10K and Vodka!, Turbodogs! Jesus people will feed you and give you socks if you let them pray with you. Don't go in the river...You can get anything for beads (as long as it's boobs)...I know we are on a girls gone wild out there somewhere. Watch out for gutter rats (homeless kids) and pick-pockets. Don't wear sandals as the streets are ankle deep in piss, puke, and beer. ummm...so much more...I went to mardi gras twice and jazz fest once... so much frickin fun!too much?

Never went and probably never will. Main reason being, my best friend has lived in NO since 2006 and if I were ever to go visit during a NO festival it would have to be Jazz fest, no ifs ands or buts. Mardi Gras is nice, but way to many tourists. Jazz fest is more locals, MUCH better music, and overall just sounds like a much better time. I'm sure Mardi Gras is awesome, but being an avid music fan and having an intense hatred for tourists, Jazz fest is hands down a better option.

If you find yourself at the French Market, look for the guy selling gator kabobs.Muffaletta is hit or miss, even if you love olives.
The "hand grenade" drinks are a great pregame, despite having 8 lbs of sugar in them.
Anything else worth discussing is PM territory...

They are always a good time, not as top notch as they were a few years ago, but they still can put on a killer show.

And trying a new food like a gator kabob would probably kill him and his gf dead right where they stood!
I would have suggested the jazz club we went to, because the beer was delicious & cheap / the music was soulful & genuine / and the people were friendly & sociable (and really happy to have us). But, yeah, listen to the locals and go to Galactic because the rest of us out-of-town'ers have no idea how to have any fun in their town. What a silly goose I was, suggesting a party drink during the biggest party of the year.

man, i wish i could go to mardi gras. i went in '01, and had a freaking blast. I met 3 of my best friends down there. one was living in colorado, one was living here in indiana, one lived down in new orleans, and i was in eugene at the time. there is no chance in hell i'm putting the details of that trip on the internet.

I grew up and lived in new orleans the majority of my life, stay AWAY from downtown. It is expensive, absurdly crowded and just a damn mess. Definitely check out galactic on monday they generally play from midnight to 6 am into mardi gras day, IMO it's the best galactic show of the year. I haven't looked but im sure there is other great music that weekend, anders osborne and papa grows funk are two of my personal favorite local bands. If you can check them out. I will also be heading back for mardi gras this year only missed one in 25 years. Lastly, New Orleans has some of the best food in the country, hell the world, exploit the shit out of this I can give you some recommendations, PM me. Have fun, as already mentioned the ONLY way to go to jail is pissing in public or fighting, and if you do go to jail, which is god awful in NOLA during mardi gras, you will be stuck there till mardi gras is over promise you that. Jazzfest is my favorite time of year and does have better music but mardi gras is quite the experience. Ill be riding on fat tuesday maybe ill see you roaming the streets.
EDIT: Maple Leaf is my favorite little venue in a cool area of town and im sure with some good shows billed check it out!
