Summary of OP:
Phish needs to tour where they will make less money and have weaker attendance. Vietnam is not off the table, nor is any nation in Sub Saharan Africa.

Like a day and a half ago, someone tweeted at the Watkins Glen prez saying something like 'I hear something Phishy is going down at the Glen this summer.'
Dude replied back saying 'That's good..... Probably in PA...... We are looking at EDM.'

They've played two shows in four years in Maine
They've played one show in New Hampshire
They've played three shows in Connecticut
That's six shows in those three states total, while Phish has played SPAC six times total by itself! And that doesn't even include Bethel. A drive to Northern NY from NYC and a drive to New Hampshire/Connecticut is basically a wash. And I recognize that these states have few conventional summer venues, but sheesh...we can't all go to New York 10 times a year to see them
Combined population of Maine, Connecticut and New Hampshire as of July 2012:
6,240,257
Population of New York State as of July 2012:
19,570,261
Population of New York City:
8,244,920
now i ask you why do you think New York State gets the most shows?? not to mention the ridiculous amount of venues they can choose from every year throughout the state

Im just going to throw it out there cuz nobody else has. What about a Thirtieth Anniversary Fest in the south (like FL), something like Big C? I doubt that they would play all night or anything crazy like that, but maybe a 3am set till sunrise or long winded story about playing nye and have a mini nye party set? I think it would be a cool throw back. Also this way everyone could get the chance to see the 30th without having to pay an arm and leg for a tic or three for two.
Northeast is where a majority of the fan base is. Makes sense that it gets the most dates.
This just in. Fort Griswold State Park in Groton, CT. Home of Fest X. It's really sourcey.Hmmm, I wouldn't normally believe this...but they do have picnic tables and flush toilets.
Combined population of Maine, Connecticut and New Hampshire as of July 2012:I know why NY gets the most shows, and it makes perfect business sense. But Phish has never been about "the business." My point is we can't call them a "Northeast" band when a vast majority of their shows occur in New York, Mass, and New Jersey. The term includes many states that simply don't get anywhere near the same amount of love despite their rich history in the Phish canon.

Someone was saying that the band likes to be within a certain distance of NY so they can transport their equipment easily and make as much money as possible. CT, ME and NH are reasonably distanced and sell out, but the band would rather drive five hours north to SPAC than five to NH.

ugh...
the band can play anywhere they want and people will come. Red Light's contract is nearly up and they will not renew. I feel that the smaller venues are gonna come screaming back in the fall of 2013... I think of 'tour' as going places that I havent been and experiencing the music... why the hell would I want to see a million shows right around where im at most of the year?
I agree with the OP

New York is always(to my dismay) gonna have a lot of shows... its the central part of town for the least coast, and its closest to where all of the band's families are. Its just how things have to be unfortunately... pretty funny hearing people defend NY/least coast shows though as if they are 'deprived' or as if NY was 'the place to be'LEAST COAST hahaha.. you mean the area where Phish originated?? I dont think anyone is disputing they seem to bring it a little harder out west in recent years but sorry Phish is an EASTERN US band..

Festival 8 also had a halloween show taking place and was held the same place Coachella is every year.. how original??? you say something about going places youve never been to experience music well New York State is home to 2 outdoor venues that have more musical history than anywhere out west.. perhaps youve heard of Woodstock aka Bethel Woods or Summer Jam '73 (Watkins glen).. if being on "hallowed ground" like that doesnt make your experience more special im not sure you appreciate musical history.. i have nothing against west coast in fact Red Rocks is on top of my list of places i need to see a show..
