Why can't they do a reunion show at Coral Sky again?

I have seen a few sit ins at Phish. My least favorite was Tony Markellis on 6/20/10. I thought it would be amazing having Mike and Trey on dueling guitars and straight up jamming out Jibboo together... This did not end up happening.

Thumbed you back up because I agree with you and there's no reason why you should get thumbed down for expressing an opinion. Or for answering the OP's question.

TheEmu I've never heard the Kid Rock show, but I think Artis the Spoonman is by far my least favorite guest.

October 12, 1991

Roseland Theater, Portland, OR

Set 1: Buried Alive > Possum, Foam, My Sweet One, Stash, Esther > Divided Sky, Guelah Papyrus, You Enjoy Myself

Set 2: Tweezer > Uncle Pen, Fluffhead > Chalk Dust Torture, Take the 'A' Train, Dinner and a Movie > Brother, Hold Your Head Up > If I Only Had a Brain[1] > Hold Your Head Up[2], Harry Hood[2], Tweezer Reprise[2]

Encore: Lawn Boy[2] > Rocky Top[2]

Encore 2: Contact, Golgi Apparatus

[1] Artis the Spoonman; someone (perhaps Trey) played pipe or flute.
[2] Artis the Spoonman.

Notes: This show featured a guest appearance by Artis the Spoonman from Brain through Rocky Top. Also, someone (perhaps Trey) played a strange pipe or flute during Brain.

I've never heard B.B. King's sit in but what could've possibly been so bad about it? The man is literally made of the blues and he can tear that fretboard up. First show I ever saw was B.B. and I can't imagine a collaboration with Phish being anything less than breathtaking.

Have you not listened to this
April 20, 1994

Set 1: Runaway Jim, It's Ice > Julius, Bouncing Around the Room, Rift, Axilla (Part II) > Stash, Suzy Greenberg

Set 2: Poor Heart > Run Like an Antelope, Magilla[1], Paul and Silas > Sample in a Jar, Big Ball Jam > Harry Hood, Fee[2], You Enjoy Myself[3] -> Somewhere Over the Rainbow[4]

Encore: Highway to Hell

[1] Rhythm-A-Ning and The Tra La La Song (One Banana, Two Banana) teases from Trey.
[2] Trey sang some verses through megaphone.
[3] Dave Matthews, LeRoi Moore, Boyd Tinsley, Carter Beauford, and Steffan Lessard. Fishman on vacuum.
[4] Dave Matthews, LeRoi Moore, Boyd Tinsley, Carter Beauford, and Steffan Lessard.

Notes: Trey teased Rhythm-A-Ning and The Tra La La Song (One Banana, Two Banana) in Magilla and sang some of the verses of Fee through a megaphone. Somewhere Over the Rainbow was played for the first time since August 17, 1992 (159 shows). YEM and Rainbow featured Dave Matthews, LeRoi Moore, Boyd Tinsley, Carter Beauford, and Steffan Lessard from Dave Matthews Band. YEM also featured Fishman on vacuum. Matthews was Trey’s substitute trampoline jumper during YEM. The opening act was Dave Matthews Band.

GreenSparrow Permalink
GreenSparrow Gotta Jibboo with Tony Markellis on bass and Mike on a second guitar was a nice touch

June 20, 2010

Saratoga Performing Arts Center, Saratoga Springs, NY

Set 1: Brother, AC/DC Bag > Back on the Train, Undermind, Cities, Gotta Jibboo[1], Roggae, Sleep Again, Lawn Boy, Run Like an Antelope[2]

Set 2: Carini > The Mango Song > Wilson[3], Drowned > Swept Away > Steep, Makisupa Policeman[4], Piper[5] > Also Sprach Zarathustra > You Enjoy Myself[6]

Encore: Frankenstein[7]

[1] Tony Markellis on bass and Mike on a second guitar.
[2] "Mike-O Esquandolas" lyric; bass solo.
[3] Dixie tease from Trey.
[4] Improvised verses by Trey that led to solos by Mike, then Fish, then Page.
[5] Intro contained phrases from the previous Makisupa.
[6] Whole Lotta Love quote from Trey.
[7] Page on keytar.

Notes: In what is becoming a Father's Day tradition (see 6/21/09), the show-opening Brother featured the band members' children jumping into a bathtub on stage, followed by Trey introducing each of them and wishing everyone a Happy Father's Day. Gotta Jibboo featured Tony Markellis on bass and Mike on a second guitar. In Antelope, "Marco Esquandolas" was changed to "Mike-O Esquandolas," followed by a Mike solo. The end of Wilson contained a Dixie tease from Trey. In place of a traditional Makisupa keyword, Trey improvised verses that set up solos for Mike, then Fish, then Page. The subsequent Piper intro included repeated phrases from the Makisupa ("Policeman," "House," and "Listen to Mike"). Trey quoted Whole Lotta Love in the vocal jam of YEM. Page performed Frankenstein on keytar.

The problem with BB was that it went on too long and was the same thing over and over. It was boring...should have only been one song but it went on for like 45 mins...felt like 2 hours. Every once of energy was sucked out of the room.

Looks2Much Permalink
Looks2Much I was not a fan of Seth Yacovone at Worcester 98...

Layla was cool, but All The Pain Through The Years, or as I like to call it, All The Pain Through My EARS brought the show to a screeching halt.

Best Steven Wright on the "desk bell" 12/30/96 for Mule (my first show)

December 30, 1996

FleetCenter, Boston, MA

Set 1: Ya Mar, The Sloth, Llama, Gumbo, Reba[1], Talk[2], Funky Bitch[3], Theme From the Bottom > Good Times Bad Times

Set 2: Timber (Jerry) > Uncle Pen, AC/DC Bag, Guyute, Tweezer -> Lifeboy > Scent of a Mule[4], Slave to the Traffic Light

Encore: Possum

[1] No whistling.
[2] Trey on acoustic guitar.
[3] P.A. cut out.
[4] Page/Mike Mule Duel and Steven Wright ringing a desk bell three times.

Notes: Reba did not have the whistling ending. Talk featured Trey on acoustic guitar. The P.A. cut out during Funky Bitch, during which Fishman took an “air drum” solo, Trey performed Townsend-style windmills, and the entire band engaged in random silliness while still “playing” the song. Scent featured a Page/Mike Mule Duel and a guest appearance from comedian Steven Wright, who came out and rang a desk bell three times.

Some guest spots that went really well:
various - Jack McConnell (including 6/19/11 with the 4 phathers)
10/31/86 Jah Roy (improv rap on Have Mercy is golden!)
7/91 - GCH
8/3/91 The Dude
8/25+26/93 - Baby Gramps!
7/9/97 - Flecktones
7/1/99 - Jerry Douglas (and others)
7/31/99 - Nawang Khechog
9/17/99 - Philip Lesh (best of blues / rock legend guest spots, IMHO)
6/22/00 - all of them (yes, including Wynonna)
12/31/12 - Carrie Manolakos (...but please don't do that to Tweeprise again!)

Worst:
That poor woman from the audience who tried to sing Tears Of a Clown on 8/11/04.

bostonron Honestly, I haven't heard a special guest I really like with Phish. Sure, there are some really cool moments. But for me, personally, I like my Phish as a four man group. There is no one, absolutely NO ONE, that can match the chemistry those four guys have together. I completly understand how they must feel about sharing the stage with other musicians. But when I see Phish, I don't want anyone else on that stage except Trey, Page, Mike and Fish (other whoever brings the tramps out)

Just my $0.02

Yepper. I clicked on this thread just to echo how disappointing the BB sit-in was. We were all so stoked when he was introduced, and then we waited and waited and waited for some interesting improv to happen. He played a few riffs repeatedly but nothing coherent; meanwhile, Trey didn't want to step on his toes or hot dog in the presence of a legend. Snore factory. Watching grass grow.

I'm not sure if I saw John Popper mentioned on here, but Popper came out for a string of songs at Waterloo, 6/23/95, which added to the great time we had at that show.

Buddy Miles "All Along the Watchtower" at MSG was a pretty good time, whenever that was.

ledzepmaster Permalink
ledzepmaster @Bostonron

I kind of wanted to -1 you, simply because you missed the point of the thread; but I won't do that because it is your opinion.

I gotta say though, I could listen to Derek Trucks play on every Possum and Funky Bitch. He brings that much more energy for the blues.
