"Chris, turn off the lights..."

Tsac77 Permalink
Tsac77 Quick question, .netters. During the Great Went Hood, Trey asked Kuroda to turn off the lights so they could jam in the dark under the moon. Later that fall in Worcester, he asked Kuroda to turn off the lights so they could do that crazy Wolfman's metal jam in the dark. Have there been any other times Trey has asked for the lights to be shut off???

Is this the one that was in response to the awesome glow stick war? I seem to remember reading about that happening once in a hood.

Dollop_of_Murk 8/2/97 was sweet. Dancing under the stars at the Gorge to Harry Hood was one of the highlights of that run, for me. If you've seen a show there, you've probably seen the big dipper above the stage, "pouring out cosmic energy" (I read that somewhere but it's a perfect description).

Pepsi Arena, Albany, NY

Set 1: Ya Mar[1] > Axilla > Theme From the Bottom, Ginseng Sullivan, Strange Design, Sample in a Jar, Vultures, Tube, Good Times Bad Times

Set 2: NICU > Punch You In the Eye > Ghost > Mike's Song[2] -> Llama, When the Circus Comes, Weekapaug Groove -> Catapult -> Weekapaug Groove, Harry Hood

Encore: My Soul, The Squirming Coil

[1] Unfinished.
[2] Funkytown tease, Foxy Lady quotes from Fishman, and chants to "Bring in the Dude."

Notes: Ya Mar was unfinished. Mike’s Song included a Funkytown tease, Foxy Lady quotes from Fishman, and some memorable vocal interplay from the band that included a chant to “Bring in the Dude.” During Hood, Trey asked Chris Kuroda to turn off the lights for a Blackout Jam and the audience responded with a shower of green glowsticks. The opening act was J. Willis Pratt & We're Bionic.

Just one more thing that made that set the best I ever witnessed in person.

Best set I've ever seen in person, too. Deeply jammed DWD, Best Gin of All Time with surprise segue into Uncle Penn, 20 minute dance fest 2001, moonlight Hood, and a band/fan art collaboration. Pure magic.

Set 2: Also Sprach Zarathustra > Mike's Song -> Simple > Harpua[1] > Weekapaug Groove -> The Mango Song > Purple Rain > Hold Your Head Up, Run Like an Antelope

Encore: Good Times Bad Times

[1] Narration concerned happy green love beams and angry red hate beams.

Notes: This Thanksgiving Harpua included the first-ever Glowstick War, as Trey narrated a story involving happy green love beams and angry red hate beams. The soundcheck's jam contained Golgi quotes. This show was released as part of the Chicago '94 box set.

Seems This glowstick war must have been small and not quite a "war" -- because Trey's reaction (and call to "go get more of those things." ;) after the Great Went Glow Stick war definitely seems like someone that has just seen something new.

August 02, 1997

Gorge Amphitheatre, George, WA

Set 1: Theme From the Bottom, Ginseng Sullivan, Ghost, Dogs Stole Things, Divided Sky, Wolfman's Brother, Water in the Sky, Split Open and Melt

Set 2: Down with Disease[1] -> Tweezer[2] -> Johnny B. Goode > Sparkle, Wading in the Velvet Sea, Loving Cup > Tweezer Reprise

Encore: Harry Hood

[1] Three Blind Mice teases in intro. Unfinished.
[2] Brief DWD tease near the end.

Notes: Disease included teases of Three Blind Mice in its intro and was unfinished. Disease was subsequently teased near the end of Tweezer. During Hood, Trey asked Chris Kuroda to turn off the lights, "So we can just have the outdoor vibe here." Also, at Hood's end, Trey added "Mount Hood" once after the lyric, "You can feel good about Hood."

The Divided Sky is also pretty crazy.

I'm sure the went war was bigger, but he obviously noticed (and some have said it seemed planned by the band) because the whole harpua narration is based around the glow sticks.
