Driving to VT to ski: Stowe or Killington?

soam24 Permalink
which one to go to? making the drive from western new york.

also, bars + resturants are a bonus. Heard killington there isn't much to do aside from the slope.

Heard stowe has more of a 'atmosphere' outside the mountain.

Let me hear your rec's.

Killington will definitely have better "nightlife" options and music. Stowe probably has better high-end restaurants, but there are plenty of good places to eat in Killington.

They are both great mountains with a ton of terrain. Killington is probably a little bigger with more terrain, but Stowe is right up there. One disadvantage of K-ton is that, without knowing the place, you can get stuck on a lot of crossover trails.

Hard to make a wrong decision. What level skier/rider are you and your group? If you can get here on a weekday, and avoid the crowds, your on-mountain experience will be about a billionty times better.

SicMD Stowe has the summit..... Killington has night life and lots of trees. Sure the trees at stowe are sick to. but the night life in killy is the bom.....Right now were in a nuclear melt down of epic proprtions. Really bad. pm me for ticket hookups. MD

Harrynuggs I grew up near Killington and went to college near Stowe. If you are going to ski or ride Stowe by a mile. Much better options in terms of riding trees. Stowe has some great pubs as well, The Backyard is a rustic local pub, I also enjoy The Shed for a laid back beer. Stowe does have some he end restaurants, but if your looking for a 20 meal check out Pie in the Sky or The Sunset Grill. If you are coming from NY and want to check out a different vibe check out Stowe, every time I hang out in Killington I feel like I'm in NY.

Fenris Up here in northern VT we have a saying about Stowe: the nicest thing about Stowe is that its close to VT! In all reality the terrain is awesome but the whole town and vibe is very snooty and privileged. There are a number of great restaurants, bars and night clubs but its nothing to write home about. Perhaps most importantly is price. Stowe is through the roof all around. Single day lift tickets are either the costliest in the country or are right up there. Again none of this means that you might not have the time of your life there.

I can't tell you much about Killingtons night life but I know the terrain is great. A deciding factor could be travel time. If you are coming in from the south by car, Stowe is a good two to two and a half hours further than Killington. That applies to the west as well.

Good luck!

johnnyd For intermediates, I might recommend Stowe. They have tons of expert stuff too, but a huge portion of the mountain will be available for you. I think Killington would be a better choice for beginners and experts both (for different reasons, obviously.)

Also, Stowe being an hour and a half north probably isnt losing as much snow in this little thaw we are having.

Also, if you wanted to take a night to check out Burlington, that is much more accessible from Stowe.

Also, if you like beer, you go right by the Alchemist Cannery (and several places that serve a lot of Hill Farmstead and Lawson's Finest) on the way to Stowe.

None of this to take away from K-ton. I lived near there for like 7 years; its an awesome mountain. And you do have the Long Trail Brewery just 15 mins away. You could also check some of the killington music venues to see if they have anything good going on that would sway your choice. You're not really gonna make a bad choice on this one.

@Harrynuggs - the shed is no more. It is now a restaurant called the Crop Bistro.

definately killington. best east coast mountain IMO

johnnyd Agree that Jay Peak is the best mountain. Class of its own out east.
But a lot of it might be lost on self-described intermediates. Trail maintenance could be questionable. You need to want to be in the woods all day to maximize the experience.

Though I do kinda want to check out the new waterpark...

PricklyHairs The correct answer to this question is Sugarbush or Jay Peak. I've never been to Killington and not waited in ridiculous lift lines and Stowe is upwards of $90 a ticket.

SicMD Shed is closed. Stowe is only 1.2 hours from killington. If your not going to hike the summit at stowe and shred the gnar gnar killington is way better. We got lots of things like NY and vermont here. Cool people great cheese, . the worst thing about this town is all the people from BAWSTON. So if thats the worst part of this town its not really that bad. The trees rock here in Killington. Go to the Lookout. Great vibes. oh and nobody pays full price in this town to shred the beast, I know him personally as I have stolen lots of hs POW... He does not like that. SicMD

Iguana Bolton = No lift lines - If it snows while your there your set. AND lift tickets are like $10 cheaper. AND its 25 minutes from burlington so you can get a hotel there and have other things to do.
