Notes: This show, a benefit for The Flynn Theatre, featured many debuts, including Scent of a Mule, If I Could, Wolfman’s Brother, Julius, and the full Down with Disease. I Wanna Be Like You also made its Phish debut. The show kicked off with an a cappella line of Back In My Hometown. Reba contained A-Hunting We Will Go teases from Trey and Mike and It's Ice contained Hey Bulldog (Beatles) teases. Buried Alive through I Wanna Be Like You and Suzy Greenberg featured The Giant Country Horns: Mike Gallick on baritone sax, Carl “Geerz” Gerhard on trumpet, Dave “The Truth” Grippo on alto sax, Don Glasgo on trombone, Chris Peterman on tenor sax, and Joey Sommerville on trumpet. Magilla was played slightly differently than most versions, with more of a shuffle beat. Wolfman's contained an Alumni Blues jam. Suzy contained Horn introductions and a HYHU tease from Page. Before and after Hood, Trey updated the crowd on the score of the Duke - Arkansas NCAA championship basketball game. Cavern, which contained the old, alternate lyrics, featured Gerhard on trumpet.

07/24/98 and 08/16/97 are my favorites personally.

Also a huge fan of the 12/07/97 Wolfman's> Boogie On. That may be the dirtiest funk Phish ever played.

11/18/98 is one of my favorites. Still think 11/30/97 is the one to beat...up until the horrible repetitive jam. Except that the Love Me that follows is the perfect antidote to that jam.

Really loved 7/21/97 in person. The funk sound was so new to me then and the segue to Bowie with Birdland teases is pretty cool.

11/13/98 is another cool one, esp. with the MLB teases.

jmponder '99 might be my favorite year for Wolfman's

7/13/99
7/17/99 (-> Sneakin' Sally)
7/26/99
9/11/99 (-> debut of Sand, which is awesome)
9/17/99 (w/ Phil Lesh)
9/24/99

All are fantastic with 9/24/99 being my favorite. The jam reaches a sublime, soaring hose section that is very abnormal for Wolfman's and then segues (-> not > ;) perfectly into The Lizards.

Not on here yet -- but I really dig the Island Tour's Wolfman's --> Sally (followed by first Frankie Says, and the infamous "aliens are coming" Twist)

April 02, 1998

Nassau Coliseum, Uniondale, NY

Set 1: Tube, My Mind's Got a Mind of its Own, The Sloth, NICU, Stash[1] > Horn > Waste > Chalk Dust Torture

Set 2: Punch You In the Eye > Simple > Birds of a Feather[2], Wolfman's Brother -> Sneakin' Sally Through the Alley[3] -> Frankie Says[2] > Twist > Sleeping Monkey > Rocky Top

Encore: Guyute

[1] Frankie Says quotes at end; unfinished.
[2] Debut.
[3] No vocal jam.

Notes: This show marked the debut of Birds of a Feather and Frankie Says. After NICU, Trey commented on the brief “Island Tour,” remarking that the band was getting bored at home and wanted to play some shows. Stash was unfinished and contained Frankie Says quotes at its end. Sneakin' Sally did not contain a vocal jam. This show is available as an archival release on LivePhish.com.

openpath Permalink
openpath 11-19-97, much like the infamous 10-31-98, can be a take it or leave it affair. Because of it's inclusion as filler on LivePhish 11 it was one the first big, distended, neanderthal jams I ever heard, so it's always had a special place in my heart. The riffage may not be sublime, but I sure find it fun.

I was there (11/19) and enjoyed the Wolfman's immensely. However, I have listened to it for years and there are much better choices out there to look into, IMO.

However, the Makisupa Policeman that follows it is my absolute favorite. (It's the only reason I keep listening to this underachieving Wolfman's)

Don't skip 7/1/99 with Jerry Douglas on dobro. Gives it such a gritty, rootsy vibe.

The one from 8/2/97 really soars.
