On The Beach, Rust Never Sleeps, Harvest, Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere
What have you heard that you like? Neil has a lot of different feels/sounds (sort of like Zappa). Every album is just a little bit different. For folky, I recommend Silver and Gold. For rockin', Ragged Glory or Zuma. For straight up spooky, Sleeps with Angels. For something more classic that blends it all together, try On the Beach.Three songs I can think of off the top of my head I really like are Down By the River, Cortez the Killer and The Needle and the Damage Done.
@Babyrattlesnakes said:Go for Harvest, Everybody Knows This is Nowhere, and probably Zuma first. Tonight's the Night is also a safe bet, I think. And get On the Beach. It might be my favorite. Proceed through the 70's with abandon, the 80's with caution, and then bask in the glory of Neil's 90's renaissance. What have you heard that you like? Neil Young - TIme Fades Away
This live one Neil's lead guitar work is like LAVA. It's hot.
Some great live acoustic Neil Young
There the talented devil is on the piano, what a renaissciance man!
On the beach is my favorite album of his, but you can't go wrong with any of his 70's albums.
The last three tracks on On the Beach get really deep.

Excellent. Thanks to everyone so far and double thanks to @Babyrattlesnakes for the summary. Btw, love that handle.
I'm very happy to help. I went Neil-crazy about five years go, listening to nothing but NY, buying up everything I could get my paws on. The great thing is that his stuff is easy to find used or for cheap on vinyl. I could keep mentioning album titles, but don't won't to overwhelm you. Hopefully someone here can help you with live show suggestions. Many treasures await you!
<---GORGEOUS SONG!
<---another one the bastards didn't let him sing EVEN THOUGH HE WROTE THE DAMN SONG!
<---Maybe my all time favorite song. Perfect folk song. Timeless classic.
<---Great rocker! gets ya PUMPED!
<---a pop song about getting "burned"
Some great early Young stuff!
Neil's whole catalog is very solid. I would really grab everything from the 60's and 70's. To me though, Neil Young is really best encapsulated in his trio of albums from the mid 70's - Time Fades Away, Tonight's the Night, and On the Beach. Those three albums are amazing, each in their own way though.
Like somebody else said, he really got his act together again in the late 80's and early 90's when he started putting out some real dirty, gritty music. Ragged Glory is a great album.
BTW, you have good taste @bernardshakey. We think along the same lines. I take it you have read Shakey? Really a great book.

I do know that it was (is?) his pseudonym he used when experimenting with film. Gotta get my hands on those books!

Not sure if anyone mentioned Harvest Moon, but I really enjoy this as well... a bit more recent (90s) I believe.
Yes! Neil's new album is great. I do wish he would have changed up the set lists a bit on his recent tour, but I digress.
Also OP, I would HIGHLY suggest getting a copy of Rust Never Sleeps, the actual concert DVD, not just the CD. It is maybe my go-to single document of Neil. The last three tracks on that DVD are Neil.

after the gold rush and harvest moon are two great albums.
Also get some recordings of his 2 tours from 1973- the first being the Harvest Tour and the second being the Tonight's The Night tour. Also get some of his 1989 acoustic tour.
