Neil Young

cjfphan21 Permalink
cjfphan21 I haven't heard enough Neil Young, and I was wondering if you guys could help me with some suggestions. What are your favorite albums, live recordings, etc? Are there any amazing recordings I can pick up for free? YouTube videos? Give me everything you've got, .net

Babyrattlesnakes What have you heard that you like? Neil has a lot of different feels/sounds (sort of like Zappa). Every album is just a little bit different. For folky, I recommend Silver and Gold. For rockin', Ragged Glory or Zuma. For straight up spooky, Sleeps with Angels. For something more classic that blends it all together, try On the Beach.

Three songs I can think of off the top of my head I really like are Down By the River, Cortez the Killer and The Needle and the Damage Done.

Go for Harvest, Everybody Knows This is Nowhere, and probably Zuma first. Tonight's the Night is also a safe bet, I think. And get On the Beach. It might be my favorite. Proceed through the 70's with abandon, the 80's with caution, and then bask in the glory of Neil's 90's renaissance.

BernardShakey Listen to all of these in their entirety: After the Gold Rush, Everybody Knows This is Nowhere, Harvest, Zuma, Tonight's the Night. Don't forgot CSN&Y deja vu has a couple Neil tracks. Honestly I am really happy with Psychedelic Pill, it is the best Neil in a while, drifting back is as close to how Neil sang when he was twenty as he will probably ever get, and the argument can be made that he is a much "smarter" guitarist now, it's totally jammy too. I recommend you listen to that track at very least of the new album.

This live one Neil's lead guitar work is like LAVA. It's hot.

Some great live acoustic Neil Young

Sprecherscrow I recommend you get a bulletin board and put a piece of paper with the name of an album for all of his albums and then blindfold yourself and throw darts at the board. Listen to the ones you hit. If you kill your cat, don't come crying to me.

On the beach is my favorite album of his, but you can't go wrong with any of his 70's albums.

The last three tracks on On the Beach get really deep.

I'm very happy to help. I went Neil-crazy about five years go, listening to nothing but NY, buying up everything I could get my paws on. The great thing is that his stuff is easy to find used or for cheap on vinyl. I could keep mentioning album titles, but don't won't to overwhelm you. Hopefully someone here can help you with live show suggestions. Many treasures await you!

Neil's whole catalog is very solid. I would really grab everything from the 60's and 70's. To me though, Neil Young is really best encapsulated in his trio of albums from the mid 70's - Time Fades Away, Tonight's the Night, and On the Beach. Those three albums are amazing, each in their own way though.

Like somebody else said, he really got his act together again in the late 80's and early 90's when he started putting out some real dirty, gritty music. Ragged Glory is a great album.

BTW, you have good taste @bernardshakey. We think along the same lines. I take it you have read Shakey? Really a great book.

Thanks! I haven't yet, its on my list along with "Waging Heavy Peace". I do know that it was (is?) his pseudonym he used when experimenting with film. Gotta get my hands on those books!

Yes! Neil's new album is great. I do wish he would have changed up the set lists a bit on his recent tour, but I digress.

Also OP, I would HIGHLY suggest getting a copy of Rust Never Sleeps, the actual concert DVD, not just the CD. It is maybe my go-to single document of Neil. The last three tracks on that DVD are Neil.

uncletom My favorite Neil album by far is the live album live at sugar mountain-Canterbury hall from 68. Everything he plays is golden. And lots of funny commentary between songs like when he would take "diet" pills before going to work at a bookstore. Entertaining for sure
