Stealing time was not supposed to be the 12/28/12 opener. Moma Dance was supposed to have an extended black eyed katie like intro.If you were in line for General Admission on this night, you know what I am talking about when I say that the planning of the building was faulty, to say the least.
I know I walked in on trey shredding the Momma intro which was awesome. There is a mixed sound to me in that moma of frustration and funk combined.
They played Stealing Time as an opener to Steal time from the fact that the floor was only half full do to the faulty planning of the building.
Does this sound right?

They seem to do that song as an opener a lot when they have webcasts, possibly as a knock on people "stealing" the stream. They did a "stealing" themed setlist back in 2010 or 2011 I think.EDIT: found it.

Not a bad theory, never occurred to me because I was rushing to get in on night one, guess I was just focused on getting in. I haven't gotten a chance to look back at the threads yet but I don't remember anyone calling a Stealing Time as the opener. Now my theory is crazy, but maybe the boys just scrolled through the threads and went "Ah no one has called this one, lets confuse em." They always like keeping us guessing.

I was bummed to miss Moma cause I really wanted to experience the MSG bounce, but I got it eventually during the second set Tweezer. Thankfully I made it in in-time for Army of One.

To me it's just a good opening song.But here's another theory ... get everyone in the band a vocal as early as possible first show of a tour/run. Yeah I know it's not exactly an earth shattering observation for most phans that pay attention to setlist balance, but it's probably right.
12/28/12 ... the first night of the run and the first show in 4 months .... first 4 songs of Set I:
Stealing Time From the Faulty Plan (Trey), The Moma Dance (Trey/Fish), Funky Bitch (Mike), Army of One (Page)
Similar trend if you look back at the first sets of Woosta and Long Beach.

Wait, is there a way to steal the webcast? Because I've been paying for them like a schmuck! I'm always glad when they open a set with STFTFP because I am rarely on time for Phish shows. And I rarely get my shit together between sets in a timely fashion. This gives me an opportunity to get my water and find my spot before they actually start playing. On behalf of the slackers, I thank Phish for this opener. It's basically an extension of the ambient music. It's like they are telling me, "Hey, we are starting soon so get it together, slacker!"
Not a big fan of that song. Actually, when I'm standing in line for the bathroom or water I love it. It's such a relief.

I just don't understand how I can put myself out here like I do, especially for all of my favorite people in the world and be treated like I am a piece of garbage by some.
Just the few people give me an ugly vision of the entire scene sometimes and I hate that.
I see .net as the veteran site where you learn about Phish. I waited for years to post. I did everything I was told, the right ways to do things in this community.
To be shunned, made fun of, taken advantage of, and ridiculed, even if it is just by a few people is just insane to me.
The fact that even for 20 minutes I was not able to start a thread today made me both sad and sick. I want to see the Phish veteran community as a place where I can learn and get advice from. Not the place that I envision right now.

I would love to just not talk. "The less you speak the more you know" is from an old strangefolk tune, I forget which one. I heard that song when I was a kid and I always remember that line.
Please. If there are a crew of veterans, that I have not offended, take me under your wing. I can provide and will do anything for good advice, and to learn more and more.
Phish means everything to me. I want to keep things moving on and help others and learn also.
