Phish Studio Albums

myMomaDontDance Permalink
myMomaDontDance So, this may sound crazy to some of you(or most) but I don't own a single studio album of Phish's or even a studio version of a song. I was just introduced to them straight into their live stuff. I only know a handful of songs and the albums they came from. Granted, I know just about every song in their catalogue, minus a good bit of covers I haven't heard yet.

So I plan to start collecting and familiarizing with their studio material.

Anybody else get into them the same way?

Or does listening to Phish strictly live take away from experiencing their music fully?

Sounds like a blast. I think that's how I'll go about listening to them.

I started off listening to Joy and Junta nonstop in my car. I'd start from the very beginning with Junta (or The White Tape if you wanna hear some weird stuff) and just work your way up in order.

JayDubya Every fan of Phish should listen to their studio albums. I listened to several studio albums before I finally went and bought A Live One. After that I started collecting tapes and the rest is history.

Their studio albums don't get nearly as much play today as live material. I'll throw Rift on more than anything else.

WGphan92 Meh... Don't Bother.

Kidding, but seriously Billy Breathes is a masterpiece when you listen straight through. Hoist is also great. I, personally, am not the biggest fan of Rift but some people say it's their best studio work. Just a matter of opinion I suppose..

Cool side note, wolfmans brother on Hoist is in a different key on the album than live.

i think the Reba and SOAM jams on Lawn Boy are pretty raging. the vocals on any studio album are great. of course they lack the energy of their live stuff, but i think there is a lot of value to the studio albums. i go back to each of them from time to time.

i'd go in order of release. . get a feeling of the band's evolution. .

I really dig studio Phish.

No doubt there are some fantastic live versions of Antelope and Bowie, but I still hold those studio versions pretty dear. I think that remains the best Bowie ever. Page is just so incredible on it.

Other favorite studio tracks
Split Open and Melt - vocals and horns are top notch
Julius - horns and gospel singers. what more could you want?
If I Could - Alison Krauss. I had a crush on her once I heard this song.
Wolfman's Brother - Horns.
Billy Breathes
Waste
Rift

SolarGarlic15 The studio albums are amazing. Sometimes I love listening to studio bowie or reba super loud. It's so clean and sweet.

I have collected all their albums over the past year. Some nights I will kick back with a glass of wine or two and chill to Billy Breathes, The Story of the Ghost, or Farmhouse over listening to something live. I love how those albums flow, especially Billy. Theme From the Bottom entrances me everytime. There is some real good stuff on Round Room with it being a little more raw, but still has some of the depth the studio brings with adding tracks.
The older albums are real fun to hear, but most of their songs I prefer the live versions. Rift as a concept album is also nice. Hoist is a great rock album.

Dino_Spumoni Other than round room and undermind I think every studio album is spectacular. Junta is definitely the best place to start. Joy doesn't get much love but IMO TTE and Joy are songs that sound much better on the album than they do live. I also like the way the vocals on BDTNL sound, the way it's mixed makes the sound clearer and refined. I also think that the placement of wading in the velvet sea on story of the ghost makes it much more enjoyable. Most of the time wading destroys the flow of the set (and i'll repeat, most of the time, not all) but on the album it's really a perfect fit.

johnnyd You should definitely listen to all the albums. In chronological order is a good way to do it.
There is just way too much quality stuff to ignore.

deBebbler I enjoy the performances on Rift more and more every day.

Other select studio versions that are worth every minute are:

Julius
BDTNL
Esther
Free (they actually harmonize correctly)
First Tube
Drifting (TAB)

cjfphan21 @MyMomaDontDance I started out with just live Phish when I got into them too. It's definitely interesting to hear the studio stuff after you've only been familiar with live. I really love the studio Tweezer. Perfect execution of the deaccelerando ending.

The studio albums are a mixed bag.

I'm a huge fan of Picture of Nectar, Billy Breathes, Hoist, and Farmhouse. Joy has a selection of good tunes, but as a whole album it's ok, but not great.

Drgordy Permalink
Drgordy I didn't like studio Phish at first, I just couldn't get into the lyrics. It took me a few years to really start to enjoy all aspects of the band. I believe it was Story of the Ghost that got me hooked on studio albums.

frankzappasmustache2012 JUNTA JUNTA JUNTA JUNTA junta but really JUNTA. I'd say Junta has the closest vibe to live phish that you can get. Many of the tracks have improv incorporated into them. Bowie's jam segment in the middle is incredibly well played. Very jazzy feel. Fee and Esther are both great, probably better than most live versions (minus the few jammed out fees) just because of the execution and the vocals. Foam is really well played, and Contact is funny as always. I like the Divided Sky on the album better than most live versions just because of the acoustic guitar and the mixing. YEM is also really enjoyable. While the funk jam at the end is only like 2 or 3 minutes long, I prefer the studio version beginning composed section, it's much smoother.
