New Trey interview - American Songwriter mag

relax_ Permalink
relax_ The January/February issue of American Songwriter has a Trey interview according to Jambands.com.

The January/February issue of American Songwriter features an exclusive Q & A with Trey Anastasio. In his short interview, the guitarist discusses his new solo album Traveler, his Bose headphones and his current obsession with Jimmy Webb.

He also talks about Phish’s forthcoming studio album, their first since 2009.“We’re starting a new Phish record soon, and we’re communicating pretty well for a band that’s been together for thirty years,” he says. “We’ve been talking about ways to turn lemons into lemonade, going forward with the record. We really want to try to bust open the door. We do all get along so well, and we’re used to collaborating so much that we’ll find a way. But even if you think about the Beatles later in their careers, they were ultimately better at marking solo records in the studio.”

Elsewhere, he elaborates on Phish’s studio process by saying, “When we get in there, nobody wants to step on each other’s toes. That might have something to do with why [we haven’t used the studio as an instrument much]. [Trey Anastasio Band bassist] Tony Markellis is an incredible bass player, but he did not play bass on [the Traveler track “Architect.”] Because it’s a solo album, I don’t have to ask him. If i want to pick up the the bass and do some cool thing, I just do it.”

During the interview, Anastasio also talks about his 2005 solo album Shine. When talking about his work with producer Brendan O’ Brien on that project, he says that their process “revealed a lot of flaws in the songwriting that needed to be worked on before we started making the record.” Trey Anastasio Band will kick off their winter tour in Toronto on January 18.

johnnyd It sounds like they are having too much fun and need some creative conflict to really produce anything that is quality.

Page needs to start owning them again in chess.

Is this the first time we may have a new Phish Album where we haven't heard any of the tracks played live? All of the tracks will be heard as studio tracks first?

johnnyd They need to do a tour in one small stinky van, arguing about where to stop for food, fighting over who gets the bed and who gets the floor, and whos the big spoon vs little spoon. Shit like that to get the juices flowing.

Since that's obviously not going to happen, we need to come up with something parallel to effect the same dynamic.

Why do you think that will be the case?

SpiritWolf I'm going to kidnap Gordo and leave the rest of Phish clues on how to find him. Except the clues are all in baselines Mike made. That should spark something special.

johnnyd Ha Ha. The new album will sound like the Scooby Doo theme song. All mystery and adventure and whatnot.

JayDubya How about a winter or spring tour to get them out of their current comfort zone?

Trying to "make lemons into lemonade" and "not step on each others' toes" doesn't sound like they are in a comfort zone, more like they are having trouble collaborating as a group. I hope they can work it out bc new tunes are needed!

Just asking a question. Hence the question marks at the end of the sentences. My recollection is that in the past they have introduced songs in shows prior to the albums being released. Have they played any new Phish songs lately that may show up on this album?

Turning lemons into lemonade comment makes it sound like they'll be using songs they've done before. Dr. Gabel type stuff perhaps.

GordonStSG Phish has always struggled to collaborate. I believe only "Walfredo" and "Carini" are credited to all four band members (outside of jams -though I could be wrong). Most of the songs were brought in by Trey with lyrics by whomever he happened to be collaborating with at that point.

It sounds like the goal now is to create a unified project which is legitimately something new from them. I'm excited at the prospect.

cactoid If they don't even write ONE new song, we'll still see more new music from them than most bands. Plus, they WILL write new songs, so its a win win.

buffalo_voice > > > > > and his current obsession with Jimmy Webb.

He could do much worse. Webb wrote many great songs. Most I know are from Glen Campbell covers.

Maybe they'll do a Witchita Lineman concept album, and flesh out that whole story through a post-Gamehenge lens.

Joy was released in September 2009 and they toured pretty heavily in 2009 so I think it's still possible to release a great album. Maybe they should have went in the studio right after Dicks.
