UIC Pavilion, University of Illinois, Chicago, IL

Set 1: Back on the Train > Rift > Guelah Papyrus, Scent of a Mule, Jesus Just Left Chicago, Wolfman's Brother, Anything But Me, Babylon Baby[1], Reba, Alumni Blues > Letter to Jimmy Page > Alumni Blues

Set 2: Sand > Light > Dirt > Waves -> Undermind[2] -> Steam > Fire

Encore: Camel Walk, Guyute, The Horse > Silent in the Morning, Harry Hood

[1] Phish debut.
[2] Page on theremin.

Notes: This show marked the Phish debut of Babylon Baby. At the start of Alumni Blues, Trey said "that green ball came up here just enough times" in reference to a fan's ball with "Alumni Blues" on it. Undermind featured Page on theremin. The second set deliberately featured many songs relating to the elements Earth, Wind, Fire and Water.

8/15/11 and 8/28/12 are my favorite two shows (out of 39) I've seen based purely on a musical standpoint. I've been to a few special shows as far as the bands history goes. But these are my favorite when it comes to pure flow and an all around great show is concerned.

that show's second set lives on another planet. if only it had a first set like....

July 03, 2011

Watkins Glen International, Watkins Glen, NY

Set 1: Soul Shakedown Party > AC/DC Bag > The Curtain > Colonel Forbin's Ascent > Fly Famous Mockingbird > Destiny Unbound > Big Black Furry Creature from Mars[1], Wilson[2] > Mound, A Song I Heard the Ocean Sing[3], Time Loves a Hero, Reba[4] -> David Bowie

Set 2: Big Balls[5] > Down with Disease[3] -> No Quarter > Party Time, Ghost > Gotta Jibboo > Light, Waves > What's the Use? > Meatstick[6] > Stealing Time From the Faulty Plan, The Star Spangled Banner

Encore: First Tube

[1] Theme from The Twilight Zone and Theme from Leave it to Beaver teases from Mike.
[2] Mind Left Body tease.
[3] Unfinished.
[4] Dave's Energy Guide tease.
[5] Phish debut
[6] Japanese lyrics.

Notes: This show was the third of the three-show Super Ball IX festival. The Curtain was played for the first time since September 9, 2000 (202 shows). The first Mockingbird narration since September 30, 2000 (188 shows) referenced the previous night's fourth set Storage Jam and explained that all of SBIX was merely a mental projection of a reality that the band created in 1988 on their way to Colorado. Mike teased the theme from The Twilight Zone and the theme from Leave it to Beaver during BBFCFM, Wilson contained a Mind Left Body tease, and Reba contained Dave's Energy Guide teases. A Song I Heard the Ocean Sing and Disease were unfinished. The setbreak featured All-American themed music. This show featured the Phish debut of Big Balls. Meatstick included Japanese lyrics. Before the encore, Trey thanked each of the crew, management and artists who helped make Super Ball IX happen. First Tube was accompanied by and followed by fireworks.

I just listened to this show on my way back from a business trip and I've got to say that is a very underrated second set. Basically everything up to the meatstick was unique for the time and sounded really cool. Plus everyone was high as hell off that first set.

Phish...where is da fugggin' festival gonna be?!?!! I got a real job and stuff... ;)

you just knew at setbreak something was going to drop, something big. place was just buzzing that night. from the lot, to the lines, to the show, setbreak, etc.

hit all 3 UIC, great times. you couldn't even walk 10 yards without getting asked for extras.

deBebbler I snagged a phan-made video off demonoid that pieced together AUD cam shots with the released video of Undermind for set II. I cannot stop watching it.

I remember streaming this show on Hoodstream, and when Trey hit the stacato burst of notes signaling the key change in Sand, I knew this was going to be a great set.

One of my favorite Waves, as well.

It's elemental, dear Watson; This show rules.

Not knocking SBIX, but what's wrong with 8-15-11's 1st set? I don't think the band has ever gone into a set break with that much energy during this era..I guess undermind from dicks could have stole that away though.

Like @MySoula said...everyone knew we were in for 1 hell of a night. The looks on every face was priceless. There was indeed..."something in the air."

Definitely. That run basically replaced dc & av, and was only a 10k ish room. Everyone, band included, knew right from the get go that it would be a very intamate time. And yes, especially Trey.

This. Even the encore had a brief animal theme. I love that they were able to "undermine" the element set, and instead of playing timber, they do undermind. That night would have been a lot different if they didnt do this.
