What year is your definitive year of Phish? I'm relatively new to all things Phish, but so far Ive really liked what I heard from 1995. Looser type jams but lots of tight cohesive band work at the same time. Really great stuff! Which year appeals to you the most?
1992 is my favorite. May not be their best year, but it was the best for me.
My most impressionable year 1997
have to say 94. My best year and a great year for Phish
Then 94, 97, .....
Then again the years are hard to compare, 92 was pure raging kick ass rock full of improv with hints of type 2 and funk
97 was deep dirty porno funk heavily moving type 2 with occasional hints of kick ass pure rock
can you say that about any other band?
I am also VERY fond of the 80's (87 in particular) but no year really stands out. Not at all a reason to write the 80s off, there are some gems to be found, but there are also some gaffs and flubs and major f*** ups. What do you expect from a young band going through unheard of lengths to find their sound
1993-1994 Old Phish
1995 Loose, Tension and Release. Amazing.
1997 Reinvention
1998-2000 Minimalism/Perma Groove
2003 Dark and Exploratory
2012- The Golden Age
All great eras. There is no right answer.

2012. Followed closely by 2011. Largely because I had never heard live Phish before summer 2011. But as soon as I hit my first show at Cuyahoga in summer '11 (I basically went in blind too, first live Phish I heard was in the car on the way from Toronto to Cuyahoga Falls), I've been obsessed. Just always ticks me off that I never knew about them earlier...

My favorite year to listen to so far is 1994. I love that loud, crazy, huge rock and roll sound.
Right now, I'm going through Fall '97 again while reading Waxbanks' book. A good read, and a great tour. Fall '97 was, and still is my fav.
