Give me some jam bands who

JordanThePhisherman Permalink
JordanThePhisherman work there way towards a jam, and that are raw, listen to each other, instead of a choreographed jam and the jam is already smokin' right from the start of the jam segment.

This is why Phish is amazing, they take the time to listen to each other, and explore, as well as compose in new realms of music.

I have yet to find a jam band other than Phish and the Dead who have done this.

Phish have balls, and are willing to gamble and take risks in order to make it to these points.

Please recommend me some bands that have the balls to do so, (if there are any).

Debates are welcome as well.

jerryguscia Enjoy! I know some people don't like surprises, but try giving this one a listen. After I posted this once, I had about 10 people asking me about who it was. It's the definition of bliss. The first 10 minutes are completely improv'd.

Sorry, I adore all these bands, they make some of my favorite music but I can't say that they are making very original music while jamming. UM seems to plan their jamming and never take it to the level that a band like Phish does, it seems to me that they don't build up and take the time to get to the point, all their jams seem to be perfect and choreographed. I like it when Phish gamble everything, knowing that a jam could be stellar or a trainwreck.

Strangefolk is probably up there on my favorite bands after seeing them at the Cap.

THIS is what I was looking for. 100% improv, no planned segments/riffs. Full out jam with some huge balls to do so.

Taking a listen now. I love it, it is also what I was looking for! I love the idea of really loose song structure and authentic improv. It's nicee and funky.

patper @JordanThePhisherman Awesome, glad you like them! They are my favorite band in the "jam scene" right now. They tour around the northeast pretty much all the time, so catch a show sometime if they are playing near you http://turbinemusic.com/tour/

They happened to play 30 minutes away from me last night, but I didn't know of them until today. I will make sure to like them on facebook and follow them as such. I'm really curious to see them live.

Thanks everybody for the suggestions, a lot of this is what I was looking for.

patper Oh and all the weird effects you hear are from harmonica. Dude plays it through a bunch of effects pedals. He gets a ton of different sounds, it's pretty sick.

mikem Max Creek. They really let their jamming flow, never any planned setlists or anything. Its fun when you see them get in some deep jam and then talk to each other and figure out where to take it.
MGB too, hey guess I dig Scott's playing style.
I love when bands can jam in the murky psychedelic depths and build it up to a peak you didn't see coming. I agree the straight to peak jamming or taking turns soloing is not my cup of tea and usually my problem with the lower tier jambands.
Jauntee rocks too, solid video up there.

Suhockness This is a collection of JotM's from 2011. JotM was a thing we did for a while on our website - jam of the month each month, again from scratch. We're just a group of 30ish year old high school friends with day jobs who dig jamming full-band style. We also write our own stuff as well as play some covers..

Glad you dig it.

Last year, I put to together a "Greatest Hits" Compilation of some of our best jams.

Over 3 hours of music.

You can listen and download for free if you like.

bathtub23 Dopapod out of Boston is great! They can get a bit heavy but are super funky as well and get into incredible total band jams and grooves. I saw them twice this past year and completely blew me away. The four of them all met at Berklee so you know they are incredible musicians as well! Dopapod- Faba
