This is why Phish is amazing, they take the time to listen to each other, and explore, as well as compose in new realms of music.
I have yet to find a jam band other than Phish and the Dead who have done this.
Phish have balls, and are willing to gamble and take risks in order to make it to these points.
Please recommend me some bands that have the balls to do so, (if there are any).
Debates are welcome as well.

moe.Sorry, I adore all these bands, they make some of my favorite music but I can't say that they are making very original music while jamming. UM seems to plan their jamming and never take it to the level that a band like Phish does, it seems to me that they don't build up and take the time to get to the point, all their jams seem to be perfect and choreographed. I like it when Phish gamble everything, knowing that a jam could be stellar or a trainwreck.
Umphrey's McGee
Strangefolk
to name a few.
Strangefolk is probably up there on my favorite bands after seeing them at the Cap.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O7hs-RnbYlATHIS is what I was looking for. 100% improv, no planned segments/riffs. Full out jam with some huge balls to do so.
My band butterjive.. mostly jams from scratch during a glass blowing demoWoahh, some pretty intense jamming, this is also what I was looking for, I love it man.
@Patper Turbine is pretty sick as of what i've heard, I love the show and there is some great music.
Checkout Weekend Sessions! Were 99% Free form/Improv!Taking a listen now. I love it, it is also what I was looking for! I love the idea of really loose song structure and authentic improv. It's nicee and funky.
Just may float your boat.
@ JordanThePhisherman Awesome, glad you like them! They are my favorite band in the "jam scene" right now. They tour around the northeast pretty much all the time, so catch a show sometime if they are playing near you http://turbinemusic.com/tour/They happened to play 30 minutes away from me last night, but I didn't know of them until today. I will make sure to like them on facebook and follow them as such. I'm really curious to see them live.
Thanks everybody for the suggestions, a lot of this is what I was looking for.
MGB too, hey guess I dig Scott's playing style.
I love when bands can jam in the murky psychedelic depths and build it up to a peak you didn't see coming. I agree the straight to peak jamming or taking turns soloing is not my cup of tea and usually my problem with the lower tier jambands.
Jauntee rocks too, solid video up there.

Enjoy! I know some people don't like surprises, but try giving this one a listen. After I posted this once, I had about 10 people asking me about who it was. It's the definition of bliss. The first 10 minutes are completely improv'd.who is that? sounds a bit like perpetual groove/lotus (i've only listened to the first 5 min)
