JUST KIDDING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just bought the Blu-Ray Box Set (not the complete one) for the Original Trilogy. I don't know why I expected them to actually be the original cuts, and not the Special Editions made in the 90's but they clearly aren't. I guess it's the DVD box set that has both cuts.

Now there are lots of parts of the Special Editions I like, for instance, the updated explosions and effects are generally MUCH better, the Originals are very cheesy. Now some people say, that is part of vintage Star Wars, but to me, so much of the Trilogy does look realistic, have lots of details, and makes you believe they are actually flying through space, or on a speeder in the forest, etc. Now to me the explosions and lots of the effects were just pathetic compared to the rest of the movie, you would have this perfectly shot scene, and then something blows up and it looks like a Kindergartner made it. So to me, the updated special effects actually make the movie more uniform, and better as a whole.

IT'S THE SCENE ADDITIONS/CHANGES that kill me. Obviously HAN SHOT FIRST we all know that, but on top of it, all these extra little scenes, extended scenes, the stupid band performance in Jaba's lair, etc. just make no sense. The movies were already legendary, there was no need for Lucas to add content.

If the Special Editions were ONLY updated Special Effects, and all the actual scenes of the movie were left alone, I think they would actually rival the original theatrical releases.

Yea man, in the mid 1990's, George Lucas "re-vamped" Episode 4, 5 and 6, dubbed "Special Edition" and re-released them in the theater. It was an absolute gift as a child to be able to see the Original Star Wars on the big screen. Now for the most part they just added new special effects, got rid of a lot of cheesy effects, and overall just made the movie look better for the era.

THE PROBLEM, was that he also decided to change small parts of scenes, add completely new scenes, etc. Nothing crazy, but like @DrPeterVenkman said, the best example is in Return of the Jedi, the original film had maybe 20-30 seconds of this alien band playing in a Cantina. In the special edition it is like a 4 minute scene of completely stupid, annoying, pointless, alien signing that makes me want to rip my hair out. There are some other shorter additions as well, but that one in particular is HELL. Like I said in the OP, UPDATED special effects are a GREAT idea, but ADDING, even 10 seconds to these films, should not of happen. I know why he did it too, he wanted to showcase the technology that exists now and how the NEW (prequels) were going to look.

Now for @Phlat_Brim_Kid, I gotta defend Yoda on this one man.

He didn't lose that fight in Episode 3, he was winning and the Emperor (or soon to be Emperor) escaped the first chance he had once he realized Yoda had the upper hand and was going to win.

After that, he went away into hiding until it was time to make a move and teach Luke (or his sister if it came to that) the ways of the force. If not he would of be hunted down and murdered just like all the other Jedi and everything would of been a waste.

Not to mention, he wanted to continue training Luke and told him to not to go fight Vader in Empire Strikes Back. It was Luke's fault he left when he did, by the time he returned Yoda was on his death bed. Luke did nothing to help anyone escape from Cloud City, they did that on their own with the help of Lando. He actually almost made it worse for his friends because they had to go back there to rescue his hand-less ass before he fell to his death.

Once Yoda realized the prophecy was not referring directly to Anakin Skywalker as the one to bring balance to the force and it had to, in fact, be his son, Luke, that would start a sequence events which would eventually lead to Darth Vader choosing his son over the Emperor and destroying the last of the Sith and bringing balance to the force after all, he made the tough choice to wait in the shadows, gathering strength and waiting until the time was right to strike.

If he tried to be the hero, he would of been killed, Luke would of been raised as a Sith, Obi wan probably also would of been killed, and the world would be cast into darkness. Instead he used his wisdom, understanding the time wasn't right, hid Vader's children and waited. Sometimes patience takes much more integrity, it may seem cowardly at the time, but in the end, clearly was the opposite.

It is funny though, after 20+ years of Vader and the Empire, it ended up being, Anakin (Vader) who destroyed the Sith and brought balance to the force. But it was accomplished through his son Luke's actions and skill. If he hadn't almost destroyed Vader (obviously he didn't finish him because it was his father) the Emperor wouldn't of got his ass out of his chair and started using Force Lightning to kill Luke, Vader wouldn't of gotten angry and thrown the Emperor over the side.

I love Star Wars.

Best response i have ever had for that comment!!!! +10

But if luke was gonna go anyways and he was gonna be dead by the time he got back y not just go with him and do some "on job" training. especially since as u stated luke almost screwed the pooch, maybe yoda could have helped? instead he stayed hidden like a coward and made luke waste his time coming back to the swamp.

He did lose that fight, and he is still a coward, sorry.

Most egregious re-edit IMHO = replacement of the original Ewok celebration song at the end of ROTJ with some cheeseball pan flute tripe. (Replacing old Anakin with young Anakin in the ghostly triumvirate is a close second.)
