He surprised me a couple weeks ago with saying "I'm not sure I even like phish, man" , knowing it was my favorite band. He said that all the songs he has heard are weird and stupid----which leads me to believe he's only heard stuff like Kung, Sparkle, Fee, and songs that aren't meant to get taken seriously.
I'm tryin to make him a playlist of songs that will transform his opinion.
Any thoughts on what i should put on there?

I mean, if you want to play him the "serious" stuff go ahead... but that' just not what phish is about.

Lol werd, great song right?! but from the song he described to me that he heard on JamOn radio where he works, it sounded like he was bashing Fee. I'd throw some lizards on this playlist but I feel like he needs to understand phish before he gets introduced to gamehendge jams
Seriously though, I can't "get into" UM with all the trying in the world. I also can't listen to the Dead anymore (flame away). They're too slow and Jerry is just all over the place. So everyone's tastes evolve over time, but if you can't "hear" the music, what's the point in listening to it?
EDIT: Phish isn't a hippie band, I know some UM fans think that they're all hippie drippy but that's not even close to reality. If he's happy listening to the Dead all the time, Phish will sound way too modern. Which is hilarious when you see/hear what these newer bands are doing electronically.
if he said he didnt like them, stop the peer pressure and let him like who he likes....
i dont like country music but my wife tries to make me listen to it...now i dont like my wife....
many deadheads dont like phish, many phish heads dont like the dead.... if he said he didnt like them, stop the peer pressure and let him like who he likes.... i dont like country music but my wife tries to make me listen to it...now i dont like my wife....
Why do I say that? My brother, who hates Phish (Deadhead since '85) even acknowledged that he liked it.
Quote: "You see...I like this. It's more mellow. It's that Fluffhead shit I can't stand."
Try it and see...
Give Farmhouse (the album) a few spins in the background. The depth, tone, and variety will almost certainly strike a chord. At least, that's what reeled me in after nearly a decade of dismissing the Phish as a bunch of snarky contrarians whose music was fun but not compelling.
Most hard-core Deadheads tend to be song-oriented listeners who hear melodic extensions of the same lyrical conversations in the band's deepest jams. Many of them used to hit the bathrooms during Drums > Space, and those improv segments were the first to get cut if a 2nd set had to be squeezed onto a 90-minute cassette. The legendary jams from '68-'74 weren't special because they were long or free-form, but because they took the listener on a meaningful journey. The solid ground at either end was as critical as the air, water, fire, and butter in between.
If you're an excitable Beavis who can't resist assaulting a Deadhead friend with phull-length jams, then at least go with something like 5/22/00 Ghost - as opposed to 11/16/94 Simple.

My only request was that he listened to the shows in chronological order.

Very hard for Deadheads to "embrace the silly"... I have people ask, does the drummer still wear a dress? and start quoting "Contact", and that is all they see. I make them phish mixes, all instrumentals for people who hate the lyrics, or covers, or blistering rockers (Tweezer, Weekapaug...), or spacey jams.. whatever will hook them, and then coax them to a show. I've converted a slew of Deadheads now, so you can blame me for the ticket situation
.
.

My advice, make him a milkshake with both of these flavors with a 50-50 mix, then slowly reduce the mixture to 40-60 cherry garcia-phishfood ratio, 70-30, etc until your feeding him completely phish food. If all goes according to plan, your friend will be a fully converted phish phan.
The Dead could be very silly at times. Just listen to one of Weir's jokes.
They were descendants of Bolos and Bozos.
imo, there is no hope for these supremely heddy dudes.
good luck
I cant stand this shit keep the mother f***er away If I have listen to more of these super heady dirty ass wooks in the parking lot i will punch them in the face. ... Bobby doing his best Jerry impression is the Worst. I saw some phil shows recently with Jackie Green that were good but compared to phish show come one.no offense guy, but you don't get it.
