Skiers...Equipment question for you!

dyn0mite Permalink
dyn0mite Hey Skiers,

I'm a boarder and am taking my girl up to Sugarbush this weekend. She is skiing. I skied when little but haven't for like 18 years or so. She was able to get some used skis from someone at her work and a pair of boots from another friend. The question I have concerns adjusting ski bindings. Should I be adjusting them myself(I do all of my own board adjustments) or should an experienced skier/shop be adjusting?

It looks pretty straight forward...stick screwdriver under the back part of the ski binding and slide it forward and back until you get it so the boot is snug(but could still pop out since she is a beginner). Should I not be doing this? There is also the little number system on the front part(toe) of the binding(I believe DIN?) Should/can I adjust that myself or just leave it how she got them?

Thanks .net!

Furry_Thug Take them to a shop. Much better than a blown knee.

ledzepmaster If she falls, she will blame you. Let the shop take care of it.

cactoid You should NEVER adjust your own bindings if you don't know what you are doing. The DIN setting on the binding and the millimeters of play in the distance between the toe piece and the heel piece combine to determine how easy/hard it is to release the binding.

If you make it too loose, the boot will detach while she's skiing causing her to fall, and if you make it too tight, when she falls she could get a spiral fracture and never ski again.

Get a pro to adjust the bindings and perform a release test, or just rent boots/skis, because its easier.

Sugarbush in Jan does a deal for $29, she gets lesson/rental/ticket, unbeatable imo.

dyn0mite Thanks guys! To the shop I go. Wish I new about that deal before I bought tickets off of liftopia @cactoid...although she skied a few times last year so I don't know if she would qualify.

Thanks again .net!

PhishDicks take it to the shop for sure, there is some fine tuning that needs to be done professionally especially since she never used the skis. the money you pay for the tuning will be a lot cheaper than if you do it yourself and accidentally make mistake, not to mention a mistake can result in a very serious injury usually involving something getting torn real bad.

chalk2001 The shop will do it for free. If they don't, they're scamming you. If you have all the equipment and all they're doing is a few twists of a screwdriver I can pretty much guarantee they'll do it for free. For these guys, ski binding adjustments are like breathing.

cactoid Also, do not attempt to teach your girlfriend how to ski. This is not the first rule of skiing, but its in the top 5 for sure.

joonze i guess there is no need for my comment...but since i started to post, i agree with having the pro shop do the adjustments or go for the package deal of ski rental/ instructions and pass.... more enjoyable for a n00b skier and you wont have to cart the skies there and home...
