Why hasnt Phish covered Yes!?!?

jcoquinn92 Permalink
I dont know if there are any other big Yes fans on this forum, but this always seems like a no brainer to me? I mean its not like they hate the band, because I've seen interviews with Gordon and Fishman citing them as early influences. SO WHERE ARE THE COVERS?

I can't think of any band more qualified to cover this band. Page could definitely pull off Rick Wakeman's ridiculous keyboard solos. Mike is up there in the tops of bass players along with Chris Squire so thats not a problem. Trey could definitely handle Steve Howe's technical guitar playing. And Fishman doing White's drumming. Thats a gimme.

The only thing i could see holding the band back from doing a cover is Anderson's vocals, but lets be honest. A) most will never be able to sing like Jon Anderson. B) Phish has never really been a vocal driven band. They can sing in key and thats great. They do awesome rounds and technical things like YEM and such, but you cant teach somebody to sing like Freddy Mercury or Steve Perry. BUT WHO CARES!!!!

Yeah i know this is a tl/dr type post but am I the only one who wants to see Trey and the boys destroy Roundabout, Starship Trooper, or I've seen all good people? That would be a mindblowing thing to me :)

I posted my dream Halloween set somewhere in the forum; can't find it right now. In any event, Set II was "Close To the Edge" in its entirety. I sorta glided over the fact that they would have to get Jon Anderson - or someone else with an amazing high range - to do the vocals.

Steely Dan's "The Royal Scam"....that would be a great Halloween costume too.

Did I hear my name?? Yes, I love YES!!

I definitely agree.. I'd love to hear Phish cover Yes this year.
Also, I was at Bethel Woods when they teased The Fish and neatly lost my shit.

As for who would sing... I definitely agree that no one will ever compare with Jon Anderson or be a suitable stand in for the man/the genius himself... Trying to decide if we'd be better off listening to the shrill of Fishman in falsetto or have the boys figure out some sort of vocal filter auto tune situation like they did on Been Caught Stealing (which I hated!!)

Auto tune and Phish... Did I just say that!!??!! Shame on me !!

This what I love about most Phish fans: they know good shit! I happened to be jaming The Yes Album and started thinking about my favorite band (Phish) and why I never heard of them covering Yes. A quick google search of course led me here.

Surprising all the teases of "Owner of a Lonely Heart." I'm sure most of you would agree not Yes' best material. "Starship Trooper" (soundcheck) is another story!

I can name lots of examples of Phish covers where the vocals weren't perfect and were still incredible. I am sure Page could do a VERY goo job on Jon Anderson's vocals.
