Comprehensive list of shows and drugs used?

jcoquinn92 Permalink
Before anyone gets into an argument or anything, let me state a few things about this post.

First, I'm not advocating or detracting from drug use. The members of Phish and alot of people use or have used drugs in their life. Its just a fact. So don't take it like that.

Secondly, The reason i ask is simply for informational purposes and that's it. I'm curious to see how the band being on any kind of drug changed the way they played that night or the direction it went to. Everyone knows drugs affect your mental state, so if your playing music it WILL change how its approached. It's just a given. So me asking this is in no way intended to slight the band or anything of the sort!!!!!

NOW THAT THAT HAS BEEN CLARIFIED! Does anyone know of a list that shows if the Band was or wasn't on drugs the night of a particular live show. Obviously speculation is involved but usually when someone is on drugs (especially heavier ones such as psychedelics, heavy painkillers, and speed type drugs) it can be kind of obvious. If not could someone give me some examples of shows they were at where they are pretty sure that Trey and the boys were dabbling in it a little bit.

Once again, I simply ask because I am interested in all things Phish and want to compare and contrast the differences in approach and playing styles and all that jazz. Any info or insight would be appreciated. Thanks guys!

Sprachtor I think it is safe to assume Trey was on Drugs for most pre 2004. No one knows for a fact but them and their friends.

Check out Amsterdam 1996 though for a sure fire example.

ivy_light I'm curious as to what your guesses might be, @jcoquinn92. I usually speculate based on tempos and such but my guess is as good as anybody's as far as I know.

Well I mean theres the obvious ones. For example when Mike was tripping mushrooms, played the same note for an hour straight, then ran out into the woods and had a religious enlightenment. I cant remember the exact date, but I know it was mid 80's before anyone knew them. I also would speculate that lots of the early 00's had trey fueled on speed type drugs, as you can just hear in the tempos of alot of the shows they are almost too fast. And I mean they wrote Divided sky on mushrooms, and everyone knows the YEM acid story. Is it really that suprising that some want to know what they were on live? If i was FBI id be asking where to get drugs, not music based trivia on a jam band for my own entertainment purposes haha.

DanceTheJig728 Something tells me coffee wasn't the only thing helping them out at Cypress. And supposedly Mike has never done psychedelics @jcoquinn92, I think that story happened with Fish.

For sure, I totally understand your curiosity. I've always wondered what exactly they were doing too.

One thing I've always wondered is whether all that late 90's funk had something to do with ecstasy. That's lovin' music, you know ;)

I am working on a spreadsheet for people who do drugs and their dealers weights. I hear they might be skinnier.

Please provide your name and address and your drug dealers name and address for research purposes only.

Thank you.

Just one mans perception though

edit: I believe I read in a Fishman interview that he was was dosed for just about every show before a certain date. I'll do some digging

Paradiso July '97, the "BACK OF A WORM" stuff was inspired by a trip where Trey and a friend were riding a rickshaw while on ecstasy and LSD and Trey imagined the hilly streets were a worm.

Abrahm Permalink
Abrahm " I was definitely the biggest drug addict in the band - there's no two ways about it - and Mike the bass player's never taken any psychedelic's in his entire life and he's never tried mushrooms or acid and he's smoked pot a few times and he's barely ever been drunk and he's generally pretty straight, but he's also the weirdest person in the band, he doesn't need it nearly as much. For me from a pretty young age up until about 21 years old hallucinogenics had a huge place in my life. There was a year where pretty much I woke up at 5am, you know set my alarm for 5am, dropped a couple of tabs of acid and went back to sleep, it would wake me up at 7.30 and I'd go to school. I got my best grades that year and I had a good time and for me it was like a sense of humour kinda thing. When Phish started, for the first two years that we were together, I pretty much tripped for all our gigs, we didn't have that many gigs, granted, we mostly spent our time practising. I was never high for band practice, I did never really smoke much pot and I never really drank much, just once in a while when in Rome sorta thing, you go to Amsterdam you smoke hash, but I'm generally not really a- and I guess it's not really my place to discuss the habits of the other people in the band, but for me personally I think hallucinogenics were just a huge opening factor - they really did - they opened some doors for me, but they sort of pointed me in the direction of some possibilities but they didn't make me acquire these skills you know, practising a lot as a band and an individual are what got me to become a good musician, the acid just got me to be able to be less mental in my approach to music in the heat of the moment, when you're playing music you shouldn't be thinking you shouldn't be counting, you know, you should be playing music, you've done your homework, you're as good as you're gonna be now just go out and bomb it on the stage you know have a good time don't- and I think acid really helped me to let go of those- to be able to separate those two worlds to say this is homework, this is the world of work and toil and acquiring skill, and this is the world of expression, and when you come to expression you just expre- that's it, like I'm talking whatever, and that was- that for me was- the first two years I loved to trip and play and then [pause] I dunno it's like I graduated! [laughs]"
