Daniel Day Lewis, There Will Be Blood.I was thinking this, but DDL in Gangs of New York is just as good and, in my opinion, a more entertaining character.
Some others to consider:
Peter O'toole in Lawernce of Arabia
Richard Burton in The Night of the Iguana
Takashi Shimura in Ikiru
Marlon Brando in On the Waterfront
Charlie Chaplin in City Lights
and assuming actresses can be added to this list:
Giulietta Masina in Nights of Cabiria

Johnny depp from fear and loathing. Hands down
Leo DiCaprio in What's Eating Gilbert Grape. It's so believable.
Everything said about Daniel Day Lewis I support. Also, love Jack Nicholson in The Shining.
nazi guy in inglorious bastards
johnny depp in anything
jamie foxx and other guy in django
"The Dude Lebowski. Everything I see him in he's the dude to me."
This is my pick as well, but John Goodman is almost as good!

@IntoYesterday said:I have to go w/ his role as the butcher in gangs of ny. There will be blood is a much better movie, but his part in gangs of ny is the only thing that makes that movie worth watching.Daniel Day Lewis, There Will Be Blood. This was actually going to be my answer.
Daniel Day Lewis, There Will Be Blood.Ive been meaning to watch this movie.
I believe you when you say it. He was GREAT in Gangs of NY

I cant believe Heath Ledger hasnt gotten more love as the joker.
And for all of you who haven't seen Daniel Day Lewis in Lincoln should probably rectify that. He's as close to Lincoln as you'll ever see without traveling back in time.
Joaquin Phoenix as the Man in Black, in "Walk the Line"
Morgan Freeman- The Shawshank Redemption
Denzel Washington- Remember the Titans
Jack Nicholson- The Shining
but my performance ever in a TV series is Michael K. Williams as Omar in The Wire
so Kubrick, being the genius he is, hired a real drill sergeant for this scene. He asked him to give him a natural perfomance like he would if he was actually addressing the new candidates on Parris Island. So this is not actually acting, this is a real drill sergeant f***ing the face of a bunch of actors, not marines.
De Niro - Vito Corleone, Travis Bickle, Jake La Motta
James Gandolfini - Tony Soprano
Peter Krause - Nate Fisher
Michael C Hall - David Fisher
Sacha Baron Cohen - Borat (this last one is not a joke. based on the above criteria, he's amazing)
Totally forgot about Javier Bardem in No Country for Old Men and Heath Ledger as the Joker. As for my original Kevin Spacey comment, he may have been better in American Beauty. The three mentioned here are my top three.

Pretty much any character that Danial Day Lewis has played.
My favorite of his is The Butcher from Gangs of NY
His Lincoln was great as well.

Tom Hanks in Forrest Gump.
Jack - One flew Over.
Toshiro Mifune in Seven Samurai. Humor, compassion and total badassery rolled up in one package. The scene where he's holding the kid by the burning mill kills me every time.

j bardem -- no country for old menThat was a last minute decision. They were in the middle of a haircut for Javier to get his hair right and stopped for a brief moment, for whatever reason, and the Cohen brothers couldn't stop laughing so they kept it that way.

Can't believe Mel Gibson in Braveheart hasn't been mentioned. Insane performance.Impossible to overlook the fact that he's Mel Gibson, or that after the movie when they erected a statue of William Wallace in Edinburgh, it had Mel Gibsons face.

Jack - One flew Over.
