TAB vs Phish

Carinis_Lumpy_Head Permalink
How does TAB compare to Phish... I am considering going to a TAB show this April at Oakland. I have been to 26 phish shows since their coming back and absolutely love it. How do they compare.
Score: 0

BigPimpinNYC Permalink
Honestly the horns and back-up vocals are phenomanal, but I think there are just too many people on stage to get really exploratory or long jams. It's a fun rocking show with lots of sounds coming from the stage but it's not really comparable to Phish (what is?)

Trey is very energetic and will rage a few solo's though.
Score: 0

TimberCarini Permalink
High Energy, no type 2 jams. All night of Trey ripping and tearing with horns and percussion.... kind of like a white boy Antibalas Orchestra or Fela Kuti
Score: 0

Super_Sash Permalink
Super_Sash ^false. They go type II on First Tube, Sand, Push on till the day, Mr. Completely and plenty of others. Trey is Trey, you can't take that away from the experience.

The Fox is a great venue. Get GA floor, make your way in early and head right to the front.

TAB is great. Some people consider it grown up Phish...I'm not in that category. It's a completely different experience than a Phish show, no glow stick wars, the crowd tends to be a little more 30+ than 20+ and the crowds are smaller and way more intimate.

If you live anywhere near Oakland and don't go to both shows you're doing your ears a disservice.

HARRYHOOD213 Permalink
HARRYHOOD213 Different, but I loved the show. Sounded very Jazzy with the (Honestly the horns and back-up vocals are phenomanal) as noted above.

Definitely check them out. Plus you get to see Trey all night. I was at the Rail both sets at the Cap Theatre and literally just walked right up.

GO!

phan83 Something special about these Oakland shows...

2 nights in a row at the same venue. I think that's happened only once before.

What this means--
-very unlikely to get repeats night 2
-probably higher % of phish songs over both nights, vs average % of phish covers per TAB show

Last time they did 2 shows in a row at the same venue, it went like this:

NIGHT 1 OGDEN THEATER, DENVER, CO
March 1st, 2011
Set One: Farmhouse, Wolfman's Brother, When The Circus Comes, Timber (Jerry), Theme From the Bottom, Tube, Gumbo, The Wedge, Joy, Backwards Down The Number Line, Strange Design, Lawn Boy^, Let Me Lie^^, Heavy Things#, Liquid Time#, Gotta Jiboo#

Set Two: Night Speaks to a Woman, Acting the Devil, Ooh Child, Ocelot, Burlap Sack and Pumps, Clint Eastwood, Last Tube, Alaska, The Devil Went Down To Georgia, Plasma, Tuesday, First Tube

Encore: Words to Wanda, Magilla, Sultans of Swing

Notes
^with Tony Markelis and Russ Remmington
^^with Tony, Natalie and Jen
# full band

NIGHT 2 OGDEN THEATER, DENVER, CO
March 2nd, 2011
Set One: Sample in a Jar, Mountains in the Mist, The Horse > Silent in the Morning, My Friend My Friend, Runaway Jim, Carini, Wilson, Shine a Light, Wading in the Velvet Sea^, Stealing Time From The Faulty Plan^^, Hey Ya!*, Push On Til the Day*

Set Two: Cayman Review, Done Done It, Valentine, Money Love & Change, Drifting, Small Axe, Burn that Bridge , Mozambique, Simple Twist Up Dave, Windora Bug, Goodbye Head, Sand, Show of Life

Encore: Birdwatcher, Black Dog

Notes
^with Jen and Natalie
^^with Russ, Jen and Natalie on horns. Trey on acoustic
*full band

Note that you're probably gonna get everything off of the Traveler album over both nights, so don't expect setlists like the above

Negatives of TAB:
--Like @TimberCarini said -- no type 2 (not nearly like phish at least)
--no Mike, Page, Trey

Other positives:
--Trey.
--his band -- they're good!!
--Smaller venue than Phish... usually some good energy, and full of phisheads obviously.
--Definitely a rockin first tube one of the nights!
--They're covers are awesome-- Black Dog is great --Jennifer Hartswick rocks it.

in conclusion... Go. I'll see you there

Ummmmm.... almost 100% of those Trey jams are Type 1. It's just Trey soloing over the same groove or slight variations of the groove of any song. There is no Type 2 jamming, just loooooong Type 1 jamming. Unless Trey changed the show from the last 5 years I have seen him play solo- Including the Fall '12 shows?

I'm not wild about all the songs but I really like the new album. The last show in '11 blew me away & i was prepared to travel for 2.. been hoping for TAB shows feels like forever since then, so unbelievably stoked for 2 in April.

He probably only has exclusive rights to songs he wrote himself.
Songs he wrote with Tom Marshall, or Mike, Page, and/or Fish, are likely shared between them as a group.

I love me some TAB and I really enjoyed Boston and Portland, but there was no Type II jamming. They can jam out songs for sure but it always sticks to the song structure. Trey soloing and improvising doesn't make it type II, the whole band needs to be taking the ride too. Even the quiet part of Sand when Trey does some vocal jamming I wouldn't consider that Type II.
Not taking anything away from TAB though, they are a funky good time and highly recommended.

Mark my words: if TAB could sell out large venues, there never would have been a 2009 reunion. And stop waiting for a new Phish studio album. It isn't going to happen.
