With all the rumor talk – so many keep bringing up how SuperBall had such low attendance, and that they cannot do a remote festival, since no one will go. But this
1. Ignores the 4th of July, family effect,
2. Ignores the growing younger portion of the base (though they still seem more interested in Ultra and like EDM festivals) and overall excitement around the band in 2012.
Phish, despite their fan-base now being Young-families, had SuperBall on July 4th weekend
I don’t know about ya'll, but that was the first of the "9" I had not attended, and it hurt.
But with my family, spending 4th of July weekend at Phish Festival simply was no longer a viable option for me. And I know all of my touring friends, who are NYers with small children said the same thing.
A festival this summer, regardless of where it is, even in Limestone IMO, will be a huge draw IMO – provided it is as the rumors say, in August.
Driving 4 vs 10 hours to go to a 3 day party is moot. The issue is scheduling the 3-day party for a weekend that Family-oriented adults can attend.
The reality is, that for many of us Phans, a Phish Festival is not really a small child/family setting. If you disagree, to each their own, but that factor greatly limits attendance at Festivals for the 30+ crowd.
And, please ya’ll, I am not looking to start debate of whether or not a 3-day Phish festival is proper weekending trip with a 3 and 5yo child. I think that is up to each individual and your own parenting choices.

I do agree they didn't plan it well enough and announce early enough. They do it again it will draw 50,000 no question, instead of just cracking the 30,000 mark like it did.

Especially with so many Summer Venues the last 2 summers having had very small crowds - I'll get my small crowd fix...I want the festival to be a tent city.
the smaller the better IMOI don't know -- the spread out feel of 8 was a cool (and Cold as f*** the first night) contrast to the runway swarm of Limestone -- but there is something to be said for the 50K+ festival.

Bu at these stage of my life, it's more about freeing up the 3-4 day weekend for Phish, than a few hours difference on the drive.
Driving 4 v 10 hours is not moot to me. It's a big deal.I guess it could mean 1 extra day off needed on the front and back ends. If its a Sat-Sunday gig -- than yeah, 4 hour drive means you can drive up after work Friday, without needing the whole day to drive.

Frankly, there were a bunch of factors,.
My main point is that scheduling, announcement date, and fan-base at the time were the factors -- NOT LOCATION, which I keep seeing repeated on other threads.
OP forgot to mention that Camp Bisco was announced before SBIX, I think, and there is a good amount of crossover fans who had nothing left in the finance box after dropping dough for BIsco. Plus both were in NYSTrue -- and with the Phish Festival being off the NE scene for 6 straight years prior -- and only the one (IT) since the Millennium.

HIGH SIERRA is such a d00000pe festy....yes it is, and unfortunately the last two years it fell on 1. superball, 2. 3 night SPAC run. so knowing phish liking to plan their fests around high sierra, thats probably your dates right there for this summer. hahah, and i already told my buddy thats getting married this summer, that i would forgo HSMF and go to phish instead.
I luv and miss it so
although i love HSMF so much, all the artists and their children mingle with everyone its so Chillaxe
yeah ya'll c'mon...
it is not moot. It will cut down on the number of people that come from outside of the north east. super ball was a pretty nice 11 or so hour drive for me. I festival in maine would be a 20+ hour drive. that makes a huge difference. I basically have to spend 3 days driving. that, my friend, sucks, and it requires even more time off work.

Best fest ever
I understand when compared to previous fests the numbers are less but to assume that Phish or RLM didn't account for changes in fan base or slow economy is ridiculous. This isn't their first rodeo.
This is the first year I am working on a project and actuallly could go and it will probably be on my son's birthday weekend in late July
