They are pretty good.
Dictionary definition of a "B-Grade Jam Band."
Which sounds like a burn, but puts them in pretty good company.
I get your point bhr I think I must disagree. What is an A-Grade Jam Band? Who is on that list? This is all perspective and completely subjective but I think moe. Is one of the best jam bands out there. They bring all the elements and have been around for a long time. Are they on the same level as Phish? Of course not. No one is. Does that fact make them a B-Grade jam band? IMO no.

I guess I really need to take my inquiry to the Jam Band Grading Board and see what they have to say. I fear their grading system may be over influenced by kickbacks. I guess I'll just go straight to my congressman instead.
Phish and the Grateful Dead. Allman Brothers when they were bringing it.
Those are A-Grade, Top Tier "jambands" in my book.
Argue about everyone else, but I will not get involved in grade inflation. Kids today are so used to getting a trophy just for showing up.

Like I said above, when I define "B-Grade jambands" (which I feel free to do because I havent seen or heard anyone use that phrase before me) it may sound like an insult, but it is not. It describes a bunch of excellent bands. moe. WSP. Strangefolk. Umphreys. etc. And yeah, I'll definitely include Bisco, since you throw in "have their own festival every year."

So fine. Lets call all those guys "top tier" and make a new category for Phish and tGD.
But wait!!! That is totally insulting to all the new jambands that have popped up in the past couple years! Just getting to play the noon set on the Remnants Stage is no easy task. They get A's too!!!

But seriously. However one might put together and label "tiers" for this genre music, can you really argue that moe. (or anyone else) is on the same level as phish? That's my point.

@steamstash - what did you disagree with? I dont think you disagreed with anything I said...

buffalo_voice I've only seen them once. Living in recent years in NC means they don't come down here to often. They will be here on valentines day next week, and because of that I probably won't be able to go.

They feel like a good summers day band to see outside in a pretty setting. When I saw them here it was in the Lincoln Theater which is not a venue I really like (no room to dance, too many talkers). Musically they sounded to me like a decent jazz fusion band that likes to play super loud. Truly, they were about 30 db too hot for than small room, but I guess they feel they need to be loud to be rockstars or something.

anyway, they are not on my Must See list, but when I can swing it, they are a good band with bent minds.

Jimmymac03 @johnnyd I definately get where you are coming from. I guess I look at many of the bands that you labelled as B-Grade as the leaders of the pack. They are the ones out there right now creating some of the best jams. I feel I should also add that these bands are all younger than (at least career wise except WSP) that the bands you mentioned as being A-Grade. You are right in that none of these "B-Grade" bands are anywhere near the same level as Phish, the Dead or the Allmans. Those three names are untouchable. They are the best of the best.

johnnyd Its not something I analyzed and thought up and designed. Its just some shit that came out of my mouth spontaneously in conversation (I think someone asked me wtf was a Conspirator, and I described them as "a B-grade jamband supergroup) and it made everyone involved laugh, so I just went with it. But it fits, at least the way I see things, and as deep as I really care to get into it.

Obviously, one could discuss and analyze the evolution and growth of all the bands on the scene and *attempt* to place them in groups (if one were so inclined to such rankings) at a much deeper level.

But of course I agree, and thats my point. What I'm calling "B-Grade" are pretty much the leaders of the pack. But the guys with the A (currently) broke away from the pack and cut the trail a long time ago.

Whatever. OP, go see moe. If you like this kind of music and have never seen them before, you're gonna have a great time. And don't ever write MOE again.

Thanks for all the responses and I especially appreciate the people that didnt feel the need to correct my spelling of moe.. they probably realized that I would've eventually caught on to this spelling as I explored their music and I'm glad they didnt feel the need to make me feel more like a noob even tho I admitted through starting this thread that I am completely unfamiliar with this band.

Anyway, I'll be seeing them saturday and I'm pumped!

harroldHOOD I agree with @johnnyd if for no other reason than you can't really put bands like moe., Umphrey's, SCI etc. on the same level as phish & The grateful dead. This is coming from someone who loves all those artists...you just can't do it.

OP you should still go see moe. You can't compare any band to phish. they have ruined a lot of other music for you and you're just going to have to accept that :-P

I think it actually might be true that I have less fun at other concerts because I always compare them to Phish and nobody stacks up at all. I used to enjoy mule (I still absolutely love them) much more but then I saw phish...same thing with furthur but they aren't even on the same level as mule imo. DSO last weekend was very good and I'm hoping moe. will be another band I can get really in to...I already really like rebubula and recreational chemistry and have listened to a bunch of great versions of each.

Jimmymac03 I guess the B-Grade is appropriate when looking the big picture. I just don't like the sound of it I think.

Have fun OP. I expect a full report.

FWIW I think it helps keep other bands in a much better perspective, even non-jam bands.

6-22-02 Late Night Roo: Widely considered one of there better shows with great sit ins by Kang, Robert Randolph, Bayliss and some Biscuits.
This was the only moe. show I ever caught, but it was definitely a scorcher.
If there was ever only one to see it would have been that one.
Black boogers and all. :)

I like what I've heard from them and could see myself getting into them. Saw a show at Bear Creek and had a decent time. They definitely have a lot of talent, and I'm a sucker for any kind of guitar oriented technical rock. I've never heard anything that blew my mind the way Phish and Umphrey's McGee (my 2 faves) do time and time again. Like the spine tingling you get when you hear the nirvana section of YEM

moe. melted my face. Obviously they aren't phish but they are a talented group of guys. Definitely not as improvisational as phish is and it seemed a tad rehearsed sometimes but there were a bunch of moments where I thought the music got very deep and passionate and that's better than at most shows. I will probably listen to more of their stuff and see them whenever they are around. Also the fans at the show were extremely nice and friendly. Very good group of people. Had an awesome time overall. Omw to becoming a moe.ron

Choda I saw them last night for the 2nd time in my life and they have these great moments that end of going nowhere. I have always found Phish to be this progressive thinking band. I find Moe good at shooting themselves in the foot. I mean I dont know any of their songs and that might influence my feelings a little. They just keeping slipping 20min song into the next 20min song in to the next 20min song. So I ahve no idea what's going on. I think Chuck is a fantastic guitarist. Al is good as well but I would like to see Chuck in something else. My friend last night said the bassist (who had a sore throat) does the best vocally and writes the best songs. But he only sang once last night in the 2nd set. I am not a Jam Band freak...I don't like UM, Biscuits, etc etc....they dont inspire me the way Phish or the Dead or the Allmans or Derek and the Dominoes do...there is a lack of soul.

I may see them again but not for another 5 years.
