Phish's 2012 jam style...."Cubism"

Interesting article, deffinitely a fresh take on Phish's current jamming style. Such a more mature and well written blog than phishthoughts IMO.

Thoughts on cubism (as it relates to phish)?

mgh2001 I like the idea, but I'm not sure if I agree with how he compares it to visual art. I have to think about it a little more.

headyburritos I enjoyed reading it...had to relisten to the Dick's "Light" when I read the paragraph about it. I would agree that it 'lands safely on a bed of clouds' at the end of the jam...couldn't have described it better myself

shoot_the_breeze_please "Why play “Ghost” centered around a 15-minute funk jam when you can begin with a funk jam (as good or better as the late 90’s), teleport to ambient electronica before segueing into bliss and concluding with a super rock peak? Who knew that hidden within all those funky ‘97 “Ghosts” there was the latent potential for such varied beauty and contrast? This is the effect of Cubism on Phish’s music. We get a more comprehensive conceptualization of their songs."

Very interesting! i dig ...its all about that juxtaposition funny/serious light/dark slow/fast old/new

and HA! "Phish long ago finished charting the topography of the musical planet they inhabit."

Don't know much about musical theory, terminology, etc, but what stood out to me about Phish 2012 more than anything was Trey's rhythm-esque playing and lead balance during peaking moments. In normal rock versions of songs like 46 Days, Quinn, etc. Trey's soloing is great obviously. But during DCU Boogie, Star Lake Weekapaug, BG Light > Sally, Dicks Light, Sand, and especially MSG Tweezer it's almost like he was playing a rhythm line during the solos. I didn't notice this approach as much during 2010, 2011 with some exceptions.

Potato_Sacks The writers of this blog are really cool people. they helped me get on my feet with my blog and I give them massive credit.

Great read and definately a fresh take on things, it really makes you think. Like @mgh2001 said its a complex thought, and you really need to dig deep in your brain to get the connection. I still have a hard time comparing it to visual art. But it's awesome to see new ideas being thrown around.
