The Mockingbird Foundation
The Mockingbird Foundation is a non-profit organization founded by Phish fans in 1996 to generate charitable proceeds from the Phish community.
And since we’re entirely volunteer – with no office, salaries, or paid staff – administrative costs are less than 2% of revenues! So far, we’ve distributed over $1,000,000 to support music education for children – hundreds of grants in all 50 states, with more on the way.
Not a Phish concert, but I have a cool story about going to a concert alone...
The local alt rock station in the bay area has a music festival at the start of every summer called BFD and they have it at the Shoreline. In 2009, the Yeah Yeah Yeah's were one of the headliners and I'm very in love with Karen O, so I had to go. A couple of months prior I had gone through a rough break up and was kinda feeling miserable and lonely that year, and as most of my friends aren't on board with my, um, eclectic taste in music, I had nobody to go with. Nevertheless, I still bought a lawn ticket and went to the festival alone. Up til then, I had never gone to a concert alone and being that it was an all day festival with different stages there was a lot to do, but I totally felt like a loser! I really felt like I was the only person there by myself and people weren't friendly like they are at Phish shows.
So about an hour before the headliners even took the main stage, I retreated to the lawn to be lonely and smoke a bowl. These two guys came up, one had a camera, and the other one asked me if I was solo. I said, "yeah" and he's like, "you're kidding!! You're flying solo?!" and I started to get agitated, like, "yeah, so what of it?!" Then he said, "How about you take this ticket and get yourself a new seat and make some friends."
The guy was the morning show DJ and he gave me a ticket 4th row, center! At that point in my life, I had never been so close at a concert. Karen O was right in front of me!! I had a freakin' blast after that, and my ears were ringing for hours afterwards (the Offspring and 311 were the other headliners that night). I've never hesitated to go to a concert alone after that. You never know what magical things might happen! (and with Phish, magic is sure to happen no matter)
