The Mockingbird Foundation
The Mockingbird Foundation is a non-profit organization founded by Phish fans in 1996 to generate charitable proceeds from the Phish community.
And since we’re entirely volunteer – with no office, salaries, or paid staff – administrative costs are less than 2% of revenues! So far, we’ve distributed over $1,000,000 to support music education for children – hundreds of grants in all 50 states, with more on the way.
I was thinking about this on my ride home last night and actually did the "phish.net google search" to find this post. I have to agree with others by stating that I generally split the eras up by who sits in the death seat at the keyboards.
However, I think this division of the eras works. 1.0 is the early stages of the band and the more experimental phase. Then the hiatus (4 shows in 593 days). 2.0 starts in June 1976 and begins to lock down what becomes "the Grateful Dead model" with definitive 1st/2nd set songs, typical placements, exploration in the end of the first set/pre and post drums, etc. 3.0 started post coma with the Touch of Gray years and movement towards the large stadium shows in 1986. I know there is a whole change in the sound of the band between Brent and Vince but I don't think the overall "flavor" of the band changed that dramatically. Unfortunately, they were on autopilot for much of the Vince years.
It's fall in New England...always a Grateful Dead time of the year for me when the boys dominate my musical selections. Might have to do with remembering all those fantastic fall tours and back to back Garden runs through out the years. Look forward to listening to some hot shows gone by with a critical year trying to find evidence if the 1.0/2.0/3.0 theory holds water.
Miss you Jerry. Miss you every day.
