The Mockingbird Foundation
The Mockingbird Foundation is a non-profit organization founded by Phish fans in 1996 to generate charitable proceeds from the Phish community.
And since we’re entirely volunteer – with no office, salaries, or paid staff – administrative costs are less than 2% of revenues! So far, we’ve distributed over $1,000,000 to support music education for children – hundreds of grants in all 50 states, with more on the way.
AC is, quite honestly, a trash pile. Just driving around you can see it. Insofar as this is a monster weekend to revitalize the area, bottom line is that the folks slinging balloons this weekend aren’t getting tips at restaurants or pulling salaries from the casinos. But they need the $ just as much. I saw a guy slinging balloons who was sitting around 8 hours earlier in the tattoo parlor I was in, did like one quick tat in the three hours I was there.
So, in the interest of supporting the local host, where I sure spent plenty of $ on food, and drinks, and tips, etc., I finally caved on Sunday and dropped $20 on balloons. I enjoyed them, the money is ostensibly going somewhere hopefully useful, and it felt like the right thing to do.
And that is how I rationalized my purchase of hippie crack…
